The year of the 'pesky Sens' he seemed great with the young players and it was mentioned how he would let the young players make mistakes and then send them right back out for a regular shift, and learn from their mistakes. Hard to figure out, indeed.

In hindsight that may have been because we had so many rookies he had no choice.

From player quotes, MacLean didn't define roles like a typical NHL coach would; and his system was complicated, or left too much up to the players. It sounded to me like this would work with a team of highly versatile players that had great hockey sense.

Do you still have Brodeur in his prime? No? I hope Larsson is a mastermind no-mistakes QB kind of defender.

I think MacLean's a good coach, but he'd be going from a situation where he had very little to work with to a situation where he has even less to work with.

Expect Salvador to play 22+ mins a night. He's basically your Phillips.

His quotes are awesome, though

The Senators have looked amazing since they fired him.

No wait, they haven't.

Don't take his work with the team this year as his calling card. This team is a tire fire getting by on elite goaltending and no amount of coaching covers the fact that there is little to no talent on the defense and little talent offensively either.

They've looked better, whether you're willing to admit it or not. You can't expect a team with no real #1 center or #2 dman to start winning right away with a coaching change, but the improvements are there and will eventually start paying off.

Don't listen to what the fair-weathers on here are saying.

If you'd love Mike Babcock as your coach, then you'll like MacLean. His system was only "too complex" for our guys because our team (overall) has a horribly low hockey IQ. If your team is full of meat-n-potatoes scrubs, they'll have a hard time.

Maybe the a Devils want to tank and get Mcdavid - I don't think you'll find many people who think Mac is an improvement over Deboer - but the team will be resilient and play hard. Nobody in ottawa including the players understand what system Mac played

In hindsight that may have been because we had so many rookies he had no choice.

We have more rookies now than he did back then.

The big difference IMO with Maclean was that in his first few years, there were no expectations from fans and management for the team to go anywhere so he could afford to play the rookies and their mistakes.

The problem was, the expectations rose significantly after he won the Jack Adams but at the same time he was actually given a lot less talent to work with. He always somewhat relied heavily on veterans in the past, but the difference is the veterans he had at his disposal became progressively worse as the years went by either through decline or through departure (Alfie, Michalek, Phillips, Kuba, Gonchar, Spezza etc.).

Any NHL coach would rather fall on their sword by playing veterans instead of rookies.

Quotes like these are why no one can take things you say seriously.

And this is not coming from a MacLean fan.

Should I have used ''very bad'' instead of ''horrible''?

:dunno:

Precision of language always important on HF

Don't listen to what the fair-weathers on here are saying.

''Fair-weathers'' are not on here. They don't post on HF and certainly not when the team is in this state.

Then he should have changed his system accordingly. If this team has limited hockey sense, then he should not implement a hockey sense oriented system that leaves a lot up to the players.

''Too complex'' is nice way of saying incomplete and not elaborate. Mac sat on his butt the whole summer and tried to do exactly the same thing as last year. :help:

Agreed.

Asking HFSens what Maclean is like, right now, is like asking how a recently-divorced spouse feels about their ex.

You're not getting an honest, unbiased opinion here. Move on.

We've had complaints for a year and a half about everything, including roster decisions, player usage, ice time, timeouts, system, lack of teaching, lack of adjustment, openess with players, player development.... everything except talking to the media, we've had complaints about.

''an honest, unbiased opinion'' is what exactly? Ignoring the past year and a half?

Listen here man. I am so happy he is gone. BUT we have a lot of young guys and evidently he's not at his best coaching young players.
ALSO he is at the very least very entertaining. He did win a jack Adams.
It has potential to work for him in NJ imo. I wouldn't be upset over it just yet.
