I think in the bigger picture it doesn’t bode well for logistics for an NHL return to play.

Depends on what they do, having only 1 Canadian team in the NBA/MLB it makes sense to just move them for the year.

MLS has 3 Canadian teams and they played each other for a little bit in Canada, then would go to the US and play for a few weeks, then quarantine at home in Canada before going back to the US. Obviously they play less games in soccer so it was easier to make this work too.

With 7 NHL Canadian teams they could switch all the divisions around for 1 year, have the Canadian teams play one another for a week or so, then a few weeks in the US, go back home, quarantine, some more Canadian division games and then back to the US again for a weeks etc etc etc. Will they do this? Who knows but they certainly have more options than the MLB or NBA had.

Definitely not an ideal situation but nothing about this year has been ideal.

Is it a tax break bc now their paychecks are based out of FL?

It's because that's the state they will be playing in and Florida has no state income tax, goes for any time a sports team plays on the road too. Professional athletes have to file in any state they actually play in. It's why people bring up the Lightning and Panthers being a good destination to sign for the warm weather and no state income tax.

Also if Toronto swaps divisions with Washington which would make sense for the year to reduce travel then Toronto would play more road games at Miami and Orlando and save even more money.

Why?

NBA only has 1 Canadian team and given the issues with crossing the border, having them play in the US for the season makes sense. NHL has enough Canadian teams to do an all-Canadian division for the regular season and even 1st two rounds of the playoffs. It wouldn't be until June that the winner of the Canadian division would need to cross over into the US to play an American team.

Nobody told me there'd be days like these...

It just signals a general reluctance by government entities to make something work. At least to me. I get that there is only one CAN team for the NBA but something just doesn’t sit right wi the this to me. Maybe the provincial government for Ontario saying the CHL teams could play but only if there is no checking makes me think that the patchwork approach may make even a fully Canadian division untenable if there isn’t some sort of federal approach that everyone can work with. It seems the vaccine is on the close horizon but until then things aren’t seeming any better and I would not be surprised if local governments ratchet things tighter until then. Especially in areas with large populations and stretched thin health resources that are probably home to some NHL franchises. We will see. I have a son on immunosuppressant meds and understand that there needs to be a balance to how governments handle and manage this crisis. That said I’d obviously like to see sports at all levels continue to the extent it can be reasonably safe.

Should we take Fitzgerald’s comments about Johnsson with Hughes at face value?

While I could see it working, Id be curious to know who the RW is for that line to round it out

Florida has had some really embarrassing whiffs on first round picks. A lot of their first round picks were just horrible. Some of them were in the top 5-10 and others later in the first, but they’ve had some bad ones.

Erik Gudbranson at third overall.

Careful with that snark. Gudbranson was top 5 in most rankings that year.

Seguin tops CSS's final rankings; Hall second

I actually agree with you that Florida should have done better with that pick. But, I've been told here that you can't fault a team for drafting players widely ranked highly.

I think you put Hughes with Johnsson and Palms to start. Insert Nico with Bratt and Goose since they started to build good chemistry last year with Zacha, and there's no reason Nico shouldn't be able to meet or exceed what Zacha was doing between them in my eyes.

Fill out the bottom 6 with the rest.

Sounds good to me. :thumbu:

I consider him a victim of the speed obsession the NHL went through (Along with Larsson). These guys were trained to bulk up and bully forwards away and then 3 years into their NHL career they're obsolete and every team is scrambling for any fast skating defenseman they can find.

that’s reasonable, but look at how high Gormley was ranked. He couldn’t even crack the Devils a couple years ago.
