I really think Yakovlev is a very nice option moving forward, as he gets more comfortable with the language I expect him to get better and maybe top out as a #4 similar to Oduya.
I agree.
The problem is that we're coming up on a time where we're potentially going to have a lot of young defensemen start breaking into the league (Smith, Walsh, Davies). The rest of our defense is young-ish and full of one-way contracts.
Next year, assuming no trades, we're going have:
Greene - old, captain
Vatanen - Arguably our best defenseman
Severson - Young, long contract
Mueller - Young, RFA after this season
Butcher - Young, RFA after this season
Santini - Less impressive but a few years of contract
Carrick? - RFA after this season
Something has to give on our defense soon. While I like Yak and think he could have an Oduya-esque career curve, a lot will have to change before he can be given regular playing time in the NHL after this season. I think for his first NHL season, though, he has acquitted himself quite well.
