This isn't a knock on him, but he's 100% a me-first kind of player. He's going to do what he thinks is best for his career. There was no way he would stay in Detroit without an overpayment in dollars and term.
This kind of applies to 99% of the players in the league and people in general.

You would think with his injury history he would take any halfway decent long term deal if it was offered to him. Most players these days seem to sign the first long term contract offered to give them financial security rather than risk going to UFA to maximize their dollars. Like Horvat signing before he plays a game for his new team. Good for Bertuzzi for betting on himself, he’s now in an excellent position where a good playoff run will get some sweet offers especially with the weak UFA group this year.
