Tarheelhockey made this one, I just filled in the last ones and added conference scoring out of curiosity.

Not sure if this was mentioned yet, but Karlsson is going to lead the NHL in assists this year barring a major collapse. That is a lot more surreal than you would think. There are two names that, by the end of this season, will be the only defensemen to lead the NHL in assists and that is Orr and Karlsson. Wow. Orr did it 5 times.

Now, that doesn't mean Karlsson is even going to win the Norris this year as there is a strong feeling that it will go to Doughty. I liken Karlsson's season this year to someone like Coffey's in 1989. A guy who blows every defenseman away in points but still won't win the Norris. Then again, not that the Pens were Cup contenders in 1989 but they did have Mario so does Karlsson getting 90 (might be around that) points as the offensive leader become more offensively impressive? It just might. And he may not win the Norris. Whether you think he should or not just sit back and marvel at the fact that he is achieving something only Bobby Orr did.

This is historically still a pretty rare feat but it could happen not only once this season but four times!

Current D-Men Leading Teams in Scoring:
Erik Karlsson (OTT)
Oliver Ekman-Larsson (ARI)
PK Subban (MTL)
Roman Josi (NSH)

So Erik Karlsson and Oliver Ekman-Larsson accomplish this feat for 2015-16.

Hopefully the OP can be updated with this.

The situation I think of is Coffey finished 2nd in Norris voting in 83-84 he was 2nd in league scoring, barely ahead of Bourque in 3rd while also only being a 2nd team All-Star. That was Langway's second win and was fairly decisive if not a total blowout, and fits the profile of the voters rebelling against offensive defensemen after recent criticism that the Norris had become just an award for top scorers.

brent burns led the sharks in 17 and 18 and is leading them again this year.

more interestingly, karlsson is currently third on those same sharks, and has been on an absolute tear lately after a slow start; there is a good chance that defensemen will end up 1-2 in scoring on a top-5 offensive team.
