What They're Saying
Chris Dilks, SBNation College Hockey:
Theoretically, Farrance should be the dynamic offensive force for this team on the blue line. He’s got lightning quick feet and great agility which allows him to get himself out of pressure with the puck, but he rarely does anything with the extra time and space that he creates.
Future Considerations:
A transitional offensive minded defenseman who skates very well and has skilled hands… a quick and agile skater…slick stick-handling abilities…thanks to his skating and puck-handling abilities, he can escape forechecking pressure…sees the entire sheet of ice as he carries the puck up ice and into the offensive zone…can be a threat with his precise puck movement or by delivering a quick shot…is dangerous as he skate the puck coast to coast at any time…knows when to jump into the play and keeps the risk of being caught up ice to a minimum…displays great gap control and positioning…not bad defensively although he doesn’t get physical enough…soft along the wall and little sense of urgency to his defensive play…projected as a strong possession player who can take the puck into the offensive zone, quarterback a power play and put up some points at the next level.
Steve Kournainos, The Draft Analyst:
Farrance is clearly one of the top two-way defensemen available for the draft, and I’ve seen enough of him to boldly confirm his reputation as a quality power play quarterback with top-four upside. He doesn’t get enough credit for his defensive play, and being under six foot is part of the reason why. Still, he’s the NTDP’s top defenseman who logs top-pairing minutes, runs the power play and kills penalties. Farrance is capable of winning puck battles against bigger older players — he’s done it against NCAA competition –and he uses his lower body strength to keep his man near the cage clear of shooting lanes. Not only does he possess a booming, accurate shot, but his ability create plays off the rush keeps opponents honest. Farrance has an exceptional set of hands and can handle any pass with relative ease, especially from across the ice. He is a Grade A puck manager and can handle a forecheck, beating back pressure while making proper decisions. His quick-strike mentality helps engineer odd-man rushes, but he’s proven to take the puck from end to end with both speed and confidence.
