I feel so bad for this guy.

Out of everything this probably will stick with me the most.

I feel the team and organization let this man down. It might not be true, but it still feels that way.

You feel bad for backes? The team committed $6 million a year to a guy that has vastly underperformed and has probably been a top 15 worst contract in the league.

The organization didn’t let him down, he let the organization down more than anything.

Man this contract just doesnt suck financially anymore it stings emotionally. We signed this guy and then lost the cup to his old team in game 7 at home while he was sitting on his 6 million dollar ass eating popcorn. Because he is SO useless they dont even play him in the biggest moment in hockey.

Good ****ing lord Sweeney.
You really cant make that shit up. Just brutal.

What i'm wondering is, what roles does he even play for this team next year? I like the guy and his leadership, but...what about everything else?

I'm not crazy about him being on the fourth line, when a guy like Kuhlman who's younger and has wheels can do what Backes did this year, and more. I just don't think there's room for David on this roster anymore. I hate to say that, but I just can't see how he improves the team outside of his presence in the locker room.

I can hardly wait for @Bluesguru to come back and tell us why David Backes isn't really the useless plug he's shown himself to be during the life of this contract. It's going to put everything into perspective for me...
I wish his Blues had Backes in the top 6.

Blaming Cassidy for sitting Backes would be a terrible take, don’t do it.

In the early days of the cap, he’d get the Wade Redden treatment and ride the buses in the A.

Now, there’s essentially no cap relief available.

If you trade him with salary retained, you certainly have to add something to sweeten the pot for the team assuming the liability.

Feels like you have to just swallow the pill and either buy him out so he can get a chance to catch on elsewhere or you let him sit and get nothing from him.

I can't see him on the team next year, one way or the other, especially after the way this year went. Had to be tough for him to be in and out of the lineup, especially in the playoffs, especially in the Cup Final against his old team... and on the Bruins side, if you're sitting him, you obviously don't really want him. Something will get figured out I'm sure, but I can't see him with the Bruins next year.

Besides the positive of the Bruins winning the Cup was the thought that Backes would announce that he was retiring due to concussion related injuries.

David would have his name on the Cup and the Bruins would have been free of his albatross of a contract.

Now back to reality.

Think I feel worse for Backes than for any Bruin at this loss. For a guy who gave everything he had and then some. to watch that from the press-booth has to be rough. Maybe there is some consolation in seeing some of his closest friends happiness.

who the **** cares about his leadership they just lost game 7 of the SCF at home what ****ing leadership
Good point - he wasn't out there was he. . . casting any kind of blame his way for the team's performance last night is f***ing absurd.

I'm not going to shit on the guy. He is a good veteran and did what was asked. He needs to go though. You can't buy him out. I assume retiring would cause hell for Boston as well. Retain on the contract, sweeten the pot, and hope to Christ the team you're trading him to doesn't buy him out.

I think probably bought out or stretched is my guess

If anyone's leadership needs to be questioned, then it would be that of the core (Chara, Bergeron, Krejci and Marchand) that didn't play well and step up when it counted.

This is kind of a quandary about how to move forward. He must be sick over this. I know he's rich and all and blah, blah, blah but this is rough. His body has very little left. He's been through a lot and to have anything but appreciation or respect for him is bs.

I think he could have been useful for a few shifts last night but there was no real place for him. Who do you take out after Kuhlman played so well in game 6.

I don't blame Cassidy for leaving him out but it's just another sickening subplot in this pile of shit scenario.

They need to move him so they can re-load. Maybe St. Louis will take him back now that they have house money for another 52 years.

A buyout does nothing for them.

They save 400K for '19-20 season on a buyout.

They either trade him, or they're stuck with him.

Who would make a trade with that contract, unless they were unloading some one with a big contract also.I guess unless someone needs to increase their cap to get to the minimum maybe,if the Bruins absorbed a good portion of his salary maybe.

This maybe not an option, but my thought was always...

- Backes + pick/prospect to floor team
- Floor team trades Backes to predetermined team at 50% retained ($3 million hit only $1.25 million per) for pick/prospect

Boston gets cap space
Floor team gets dead cap with low actually money owed + picks/prospects
3rd team gets Backes at a $3 million cap hit

^Backes at 50% retained is actually not a bad deal for a few years. He also could be a expansion draft guy, assuming SEA would want him to "set the tone" of how things are done.
