contract is a disaster but backes has been good anytime cassidy puts him with kuraly. that line shouldn't be touched -
they play well together and wagner has been a nice fit on the other wing.

assuming bergy comes back healthy, the #1 line is obvious. that heinen-krejci-debrusk line has a lot of promise. i like the kuraly trio now. the 3rd line is a train wreck and needs to be sorted out.

The third line could sort itself out. JFK looks like as long as he’s not up against Crosby he’ll be good. Then you have Bjork and Nordstrom right now and potentially Donato soon.

Backes looked pretty good when he came back from colon surgery (in record time) last season. Once that hit happened in the playoffs though he has not been the same player. I still think there is some lingering **** going on, but he has a heart of a warrior and I am rooting for him.

Backes' contract was signed before he was 35, so he can retire without us facing any cap penalties, correct?

Not sure why he would when he's still entitled to a few mil, but just wanted to clarify my understanding ofthe current cba.

he was an absolute monster tonight. just when I'm ready to give up on this guy he has a game like tonight. Still think he's got one monster playoff run in his future.

I don’t want to derail this thread but signing a guy that had a career year with 20ish goals and barely any assists that played with Getzlaf to 5 years is just bad, he didn’t have a proven track record. The only way I could see signing him for more money would be on a one or two year deal.

Backes is completely different because even though he was getting older he was proven.

He actually played with Kesler when he scored 22 in 65. He then got his 8 in 16 in the playoffs mostly with Getzlaf and Perry. He turned 26 that season. And while that was his breakout season at 26, he did have very very good 5 on 5 per 60 goal stats playing lower in the lineup in his early 20s. While no one would expect him to play like a 30 goal scorer, he also wasn't paid like a 30 goal scorer. I loved the signing.

I read somewhere his first goal he would do the Matthews after goal celebration. Anyone able to do a side by side? lol . I'be been one of his biggest critics but he's finally coming around and love it!

I wouldn't call you the biggest critic.

I would probably use the term "most impatient".

One of the biggest character traits required by a coach/Gm is patience.

**This is not a dig at you. It is actually a compliment.

$6 million player playing in the bottom 6 wherever needed. Not one peep out of him about being dissatisfied or showing a hit to his ego. Doing his absolute best to contribute however he can to help the team win in the face of a slew of health/injury problems. Warrior.

been tough on him for sure, done my very best to give him the benefit of the doubt, thought maybe he was officially cooked but great game last night, fingers crossed he uses this as a springboard to some form of consistency moving forward understanding of course he won`t be a 2 ppg player

Stronger game last night; can't deny it. Not quite $6 million worth, but strong. Leave him on 4th line all season if that's what it takes to get him going. We have more than enough youth to fill out the 2nd/3rd lines.

Nice to see Backes turning the corner and looking like the player we saw last year.

I’d love to see this new and improved version get one more shot at center. Slot him between Marchand and Pasta and see how they look. He’s had a couple of big games between them before.
Yes , I would like to see that against the Leafs . We aren’t beating Toronto tomorrow unless Pasta and Marchand wake up . I think they could use a big body on that line .
