That concussion at the end of the year last year looked bad. I can only assume he and his family are going to begin worrying about his health. This is also a problem because of the way he plays... if he isn't physical, he isn't effective. I like Backes on this team, and think he still has plenty to bring... but these concussions are bad news, and I think sadly he is probably done, or should be.

This is so true.

There comes a time when your health and family comes first and I think Backes may have reached that point, unfortunately earlier than he wanted. like you said Backes playing style his whole, long career is one of a warrior, making hits, taking hits and sticking up for his teammates at all cost. Hopefully he will fully recover and makes the right decision based on his doctors suggestion and his family's. I as a fan with nothing to do with his contract situation, but more to do with his long term health, hopes he actually takes a lot of time off to fully recover ala Rik Nash.

How many is this for Backes? He's the type of player, I believe that would in the past, may have had them but just kept on playing and that makes it extremely long term dangerous every hit you receive or give.

There has to be some big decisions coming up with this team.

I don’t think they’re a winning team right now, and it sucks because Bergeron, Marchand, Chara, Krejci aren’t getting younger.

They’re at an odd stage right now. I think they need to make a serious trade or two... early rather than later.
Have to think Backes will be gone one way or another by July 1st,what's the least painful way will be the key but he needs to be gone
I assume you mean playoff winning?
Im completely open to moving a bunch of prospects for the right guy, there's 3-4 I'd rather not move for now but the rest..
I hear you with the odd stage,Older core, tons of kids only one middle range guy in John Moore
Wally is right,Black Friday start improving the team

I don't think Backes is going to be here much longer, but probably at least until July 1st as another poster pointed out he gets a big bonus then.

I don't feel bad at all. The guy has had an incredible career. Sometimes a player knows when he's done and walks away on their own terms. Other times, they have to be forced out. It sucks but it happens to the best of them.
I’ll always remember the 2010 season before the Olympics when Backes went around fighting guys from team Canada. I know he fought Toews, one of Perry or Getzlaf and I think there was more. I loved that and became a big fan. I wish him all the best but it’s over.

Some team offered him $30 million dollars over five years. That is a whole lot of temptation to turn down. Not sure if I would. But the concussions seem to be coming fast and furious for him. Definitely needs a long look in the mirror at this point.

Absolutely shocked that Kevan Miller was bitten by the injury bug.

i mean, i love mcquaid but he was always hurt too. that's gonna happen playing that role.
although miller hasn't missed any playoff games if i recall correctly.

as for backes, i hope he's ok from a human standpoint. concussions are brutal, have experienced
it first-hand. whether he comes back or not, it is what it is.

I think Kevan has been terrible in the playoffs for whatever reason, and I get both were/are hurt A lot but I’d much rather have McQ still abs less cap space than Kampfer

Someone should make a thread called “This entire team sucks” just for you.
Again, the Mob’s sword of indignation strikes against the messenger’s shield of reason.

Every market has some buyers and has some sellers. It’s ok if you want to be buyers. Why does it infuriate you so much at those who are sellers?

Think about it.

He's not merely "toast" at this point; he's burnt toast, as is the team this year barring a miracle.

You proclaiming your own opinion as the one of reason/reality isn’t helping anything.

You are incredibly pessimistic while others see some bright spots, some more than others.

Contrary to what every typical downer believes, having a grim outlook is not a correlation to objectivity. It is what it is: pessimism.

I'm just saying, Linseman may have a point here. The wins against Buffalo, Detroit, Edmonton, Ottawa. All are potentially non-playoff teams. The injuries to D piling up. Kampfer and a 19 year old are in the lineup now. The young players may experience growing pains for a good portion if not all of the season. We shall see but that gap in personnel between the core guys who are 30 and older and the 24 and under group (some who are developing on the job) may be problematic. The 24-30 year old guys are JAGS (Moore, Nordstrom, Kuraly, Acciari, Wagner, Grizz). Not saying that they aren't good players but not difference makers. Montreal and Ottawa have no expectations on them, no pressure. Montreal's speed in particular may prove troublesome and annoying to the B's this year. I would be more comfortable if the B's show that they can beat playoff teams. We shall see.

I thought Miller was our best defenseman back in 2017 against Ottawa.

Miller and the fourth line were great that series.

Shame a year later it was the opposite. I thought Miller was playing with a broken bone in his hand or something last playoffs since the grenade looked like a puck on his stick. I think hes solid in his role because he can step into Carlo or Charlies if they go down. But when Krug comes back I wouldn't mind seeing him play his off side and be 2nd/3rd RD.

As for Backes you have to think this might be it. LTIR and 2 years of the Savard situation isn't the end of the world and since real dollars owed will be low come July 2nd a team below the cap floor might want his contract. I don't think much of the NHL is below the cap floor though.

I'd be worried about Backes getting clocked again hes a competitor and wants to contribute and will likely leave himself vulnerable from being a step behind constantly.
