Boyle rushed back from a concussion last season. That attributes to most of his bad play. After a full summer off and having that time to recover he should, in theory, be much better than he was last season.

He can't really get worse then he was this season so I agree he can get better. The issue is that he'll be 38 to start the year and he's shown a decline in play and production recently. I'd just rather avoid him if possible but if we miss on all other targets and no trades materialize then I guess he'd do, we need to bring in 1 RHD so he'll do over Kostka.

If we were to sign him to a 2 year deal he would be 39 at the completion given his July birthdate. That said his age is hugely overblown when the contract would be pretty much the same contract we gave Salo 2 years ago age and all.

It's not hugely overblown? Look at Salo in year two over year one he wasn't the same. We also had Salo playing top pair with that contract it would be a mistake to play Boyle on the top pair. Boyle at 4.5 to play bottom pair with 2nd unit PP time is too much.

Hopefully I'm wrong and he rebounds to a 50 point top 4 defender, I just don't see it right now.

Whoa lots of hate for Barbs in this thread!

I dont hate the kid I am just seriously disappointed. I expected a lot more my guys viewed him as a top four and top power play guy and said he was fast and could handle the rigors of the nhl and was big enough etc.. not physical but wouldnt get beaten that way and was calm etc..

Everything I was told came out to be less than expected by a lot. I hope for him but I dont see much for age and what he was sposed to be etc.

I think is unfair to view him like other guys in ways yet he was ahl defender or year and is guys he outplayed that year by a ton who look a hell of a lot better now.

So is very concerning. I bought into hype of him and his play is less than expected much less the hype.

If we move purcell and malone's contracts out boyle at over 30 is pretty much a wash if get power play points from him on right side even if is brewers partner and not a top two.

I will take a WASH every day of week for purcell. ANYTHING is upgrade to malone:) Is seriously that simple

I think Barberio can still put it together. It was his rookie season. Way too soon to write him off.

Here's the problem with that. He doesn't provide offense either. If you're an offensive dman and struggling with defense that's ok because the offense makes up for it.

He literally has no redeeming qualities at the NHL level. Again, it's not the physical attributes it's the mental. He might pan out to be another MAB. But I don't see much more from him. He's certainly not worth the trade off of playing him at this point.

I think you just have horribly unrealistic expectations for him at this point. He barely got a chance to string a handful of games together and was still 5-5-10 for the year while shooting 9%. Thats damned decent from a 7th D.

I still think he would be better suited to moving to offense as a 3rd pair winger, but not with us.

Anyway, to get back to the thread topic, I would not mind Boyle for 2 years, 1 as Salo's replacement and 1 as Brewer's. Hopefully Koekkoek, Sustr, new guy will be ready to play top 4 by then.

The problem with bringing in Boyle is that if we're bringing him in to play on the top pair he's going to struggle and it will not be much different then it was with Salo late in the year. If we play him on the 2nd pair with Carle I don't believe that'll work well either as Carle needs a strong defensive partner. On the 3rd pair he can be alright with Brewer, the problem then becomes what are we doing with Sustr? I believe Sustr can play on the top pair but will have some struggles, if we get someone else to play on the top pair and Boyle then Sustr is in Syracuse which I think is a mistake as he's NHL ready. Barberio will also not be getting many starts unless we go 7D which is likely but Boyle with get PP time not Barberio so we won't be playing to his strengths.

I would bet a lot we have enough injuries no matter who or what we bring in or how many that sustr wil get plenty of time with the big club this year.

The barberio thing and strengths? His strengths is getting puck out of zone and joining the rush and maybe not the over hyped ability on the power play cause as can show his stats on power play do not agree he is that good at it not when sustr and gudas have as good of stats? Especially on their abilities to get pucks to the net on power play where barberio has struggled? This is the same thing detroit fans say about in keeping smith who with wrong partners is a train wreck in the defensive zone. Smith has not been used on the power play to the madness of the fan base:) Yet is learning to play decent game with right partners.

I don't feel he is unrealistic and the difference? I think is he is also a winger like me. We have smith to view. Basically one year older not allowed to do offense has huge high offensive potential we have all heard about that is wings fans and his play is night and day to barberio's who had all this hype.

The 9 % is great and I personally said he has a great goal scoring touch and he gets close but he gets way too many shots blocked and he misses the net way too often for the hype he has meaning barberio. P.S. on that 9 % stat? Blocked shots dont count I believe they throw that out so don't necessarily agree with that so much get me a guy who gets the puck through thats all I want. Barberio has struggled with that. I do not see that changing anytime soon.

Barberio after his break out season was touted as a very good 200 foot both way solid player with high offensive and power play capabilities. He has been a let down on all of that. Is like I said at 24 tons of guys he outplayed that year and even the next year in AHL who passed him in all areas now as a pro.

I hope that changes but wouldnt hold out on that hope myself. I expect him to get better this year but expected him to get more pucks on net last year time will tell good news is he will get his chance cause we are thin. If he has it he should prove it this year.

I was beyond disappointed with his playoffs. I don't even know the word but its like a horror movie saying lol for how bad he was in playoffs and I mean that. I was in shock at his play during the year cause thought he had a fair amount of time to play a better game in playoffs. Aghast? Think that is the word I would use.

Train wreck so to speak. To me with the time he did play to play that badly is very scary. Maybe we overlooked it as fans or I saw something others ignored?

P.S. I could be reading advanced stats incorrectly and have heard there is issues with extra skater but Mark Barberio has failed the eye test for me personally.

I hope hose is right and barberio gets his power play shot and he proves he can handle it yet all I remember is him pinching losing pucks and creating break aways especially against montreal and I wanted him BENCHED.

I am one of wing fans who totally hates brendan smith and his play and playoffs? I wouldnt say want him benched but am happy we got others coming. So is a large difference for one year of age between the two.

Something I appreciated with Barbs was how he so often got his shots at goal, some guys got a great shot but misses a lot but Barbs was good at getting the shots at goal, creating rebounds and scoring situations.

Looks like Boyle won't sign with the Isles pretending he doesn't want to sign for a rebuilding franchise.

Still skeptical in signing him but now there's an option

Really hoping we don't pursue him too heavily until we are out of the race for Fayne or Stralman. I fear the decline is coming..Boyle is 37 now after all.

Are we talking about something like $5m+/year for a guy who's going to be mainly a PP specialist? Which would probably mean removing Hedman from the PP?

Why pay him? We have a younger and faster version in Barbs.

Leadership, over 100 playoff games & 70 career playoff points, right handed shot, PP QB, a true puck mover, can mentor Barbs, Koekkoek, and other young d, can still put up decent points and play 20 minutes a night if need be.

At his old age I doubt he'll be the offensive force he once was, but he still has a good amount to offer. I think his playoff experience, leadership, and ability to help the young guys who will replace him in 2, 3 years will all be very valuable. He just seems like a really good fit for us. Boyle also being a long time bolt and member of the cup team is just icing on top for the fans and for the people who can market that.
