2x3 is all I would do, play him on the 3rd pair with Brewer and the 2nd PP unit. Let Sustr get top pair minutes and hopefully Carle-Gudas regain early last season form. It'll be the highest paid 3rd pair but don't see him as top 4 anymore unless it's just filling in for a few games.

3 years? Not sure I would give him 3 years. Maybe at 2 it wouldn't be an issue, but not my preference.

If you were looking at a blind resume of Boyle's current credentials, would there be interest?

We need to be careful about now associating the prime of Boyle's career with what he is today. I don't really see much of an upgrade of any kind of Boyle over Sami Salo, and I think we're all pretty well finished with Sami Salo as a member of this organization.

It's 2 years at 3 million a year. Don't think he'll take it unless he really wants to come back here because I'm sure a team will give him over 4mil. He's not worth more then 3.5 and that's pushing it, his PP points doesn't make up for the huge decline in the rest of his game.

From posts on the SJS board it seems his play has gone down considerably (I read 'fell of a cliff').

I do not think we need any more bottom pair D, which he is now.

The only D we need is a #2

He was concussed this year and came back to early leading to the off season. I think he would be great as a Salo replacement for two years. Boyle and a trade acquisition would make the defensive squad a pretty darn good one next season.

We have such an abundance of everything (except a # 2 and # 3 defenseman) that we should just overpay and get whatever TOP TALENT is available to fill those spots.

We do not need to wait a couple of years to see if our young defenders pan out.
The time is now.

So picking up Boyle would be silly We already have twins in Brewer and Salo, we don't need triplett's.

Our defense was extremely exposed against Montreal. We need to get that # 2 and # 3.

Overpay please.

Salo won't be here next season(unless Yzerman can't find his targets) and Brewer is good in his bottom pairing/top-4 spot duty role. He does make a lot for that role so he may be bought out for it.

Id rather have Stralman for a little more money.

But if push comes to shove and we just cant find a better RHD, I wouldnt hate the move as long as it wasnt for more than 2 years and a cap hit of more than 3M.

Boyle is nothing like Brewer and Salo, he's slowing down, but still makes a good first pass, and can skate the puck out of his zone. He would be great on the pp with Stamkos. He was way overused in San Jose, but he still brings heart and work ethic.

I loved Dan Boyle. He was someone (one of many) that I wish we could of held on to. But, he really does not seem to have much left in the tank. (Granted, my opinion is based on the very few San Jose games I have seen on TV, not on stats, so I could be completely wrong).

Boyle is down right awful now. Hopefully we steer clear of him this off season, we've already picked up an ageing RHD (Salo) we don't need another one even if we don't retain Salo. Stralman and Fayne are up for grabs.

We need a #2 and #3, how does Boyle address that need? Sustr and Gudas are better options for us.

Cool, so we're all set with RHD running the point pivot on the PP for Stamkos?

Are you saying that Dan Boyle, at this point in his career, can't do what Foster did for us? Boyle wouldn't be brought in as a #2/3. He'd be brought in to demonstrate to players like Barberio how to actually do their job. #6/7 PP. Just as Brewer was incorrectly used, Boyle was incorrectly used for their age and skills. We let Brewer drop down to 5/6 and he was perfect for us. The same can be done with Boyle. With Cooper's inclination to run 11/7, that could work out. If the term is short and the money is right, I'd love to have Boyle back.

I dunno. Our PP looked pretty good post-Callahan with Hedman back there, LHD or not. I don't think we should be in the market for a pure PP specialist unless he brings more to the table.

I really disagree with the boyle stuff.

He is not that bad he can play with anyone on our team including hedman. He still has a lethal first pass he still is decently fast first step rushing up ice etc.. Faster than others we have he is upgrade right now for gudas or sustr. One is slow other is not ready.

Is that simple. I dont want to overpay for him but people bring up stralman and fayne? To me neither offers a whole lot boyle would not honestly. They are not the fastest guys or best passers ever they both are solid number 4's but not much more. Boyles compete level is high enough to be ok for a couple of years.

He still is ok not great anymore but ok. He aint gonna get us 40 but 30 some sure teach the others sure. Faster than salo but playing as well as he did to start the year yes.

That is my take of it. I saw him play when out in la for the whole month and some other games so like 15 times. He was ok not great but ok. He was doing his job.

I would like getting say both him and fayne that would be ideal to me. I do not want to pay him 5 million for two years so 10 million total and I think he does get that.

I will be mad but usually am mad on what d guys get:)
