whoa. this hurts. 6 months for a core player on defence going forward. not only missing part of the start of the season, but also summer development time.

I wonder if this was a re-aggravated issue for him? He also missed last season Calder Cup final with a shoulder injury.

His potential replacement basically needs to have =< Dermott's cap hit. This might not a be a 23 man roster opening day. Definitely want to make Sandin's contract slide if he's not going to be a regular. Time to get creative, Dubas.

As much as this sucks for Travis I wonder if we offer him an extension this summer now. Give him a guaranteed $2-$3M on a 3 year deal and protects him against a bad contract year coming off the injury. The reward is obviously a cheap top 4 D for the next 3 seasons.

Just a question. With both Zach Hyman and Travis Dermott being out 6 months maybe more does that
help them with the 2019 salary cap?

Hyman you save money. Dermott you have to replace at a similar cap.

I feel like this surgery could have been done earlier. Why wait?

Reilly -???
Muzzin - Zaitsev
Rosen - Liljgren

Give Lilj/Rosen some time until he is ready?
Maybe give Kivihalme/Sandin a sneak peak?

This guy really needed an off-season weight training program.
Hopefully he doesn’t miss too much time in the gym.

There's no sugar coating this, this is awful news. This is positionally our weakest depth area, and even if he's back by end of this year, how long before he's in game shape etc. But more importantly what the heck is this blue line going to look like next season - a ton of hope and inexperience as of this moment.
Maybe trade a useless forward.............we have a number of them........Nylander comes to mind.

So he could play in the playoffs. Who knows.. maybe he just injured it again in the gym.
6 months takes you to October. These guys aren’t gone for long. Just sucks for a young dman to miss an offseason of training... and sucks having injuries this big period, for both players.

Sandin Borgman and Rosen all make less than Dermotts's cap hit.

Toronto
Glass half full:

- gives an opportunity for another defender to audition for a future full time gig
- may lower Dermott's contract demands in the summer of 2020

Dreger said on “First Up” that Tavares is injured and has returned to Toronto?
