Depends on term and $. He's a definite improvement on the 3rd pairing, but expecting him to play 2LD next to Green is a mistake. The problem with using money on this, is it still ideally leaves the healthy D looking something like this:

Alzner - Carlson
XX - Green
Orpik - Orlov

Maybe they have something up their sleeves with a Green/Stralman or Niskanen signing, but I'm not holding my breath.

Well Orpik is in his mid-30s and has 92 career playoff games. I'm going to assume Mike Green led Caps d-men in that department before this signing, and he had 57. fwiw

5 years is a little scary. That will take him to 39 or 40, iirc. He just got married in 2012 so probably settling down in general and looking for that last cash-in. Maybe he traded some dollars for term but hope he comes back revved up and with snarl.
