Do you really believe Stamkos liked Florida so much that he chose to sign for $8.5 MM instead of take $11MM from elsewhere? Zero taxes had nothing to do with it?

He liked his home? He wanted to stay on a winner? Are you suggesting that people that resign with teams not in Texas, Florida, or AZ are idiots? Are you suggesting that people that resign in those states must be using taxes as their primary driver? Are you suggesting that Dallas, Arizona, Florida and Tampa are going to be the NHLs overlords for the next few decades?

Taxes mattered with Stamkos.
His contract is also structured to be a) lockout proof, and b) maximize those tax benefits. His pay is almost entirely bonus, which is released on July 1 of a given year, and the rate paid is based on Florida taxes. Meanwhile, his salary (which is paid on a per-game basis) is based on where the game is played. By being bonus heavy, he ensures that the ~35 games he plays in jurisdictions that tax income have relatively little effect on his take home.

Now - the degree it benefits is overstated mostly. The majority of the games are played in the US with a tax rate ranging from low income taxes (probably in the vein of six percent) to somewhat higher (I'd imagine California and the Canadian markets outside of Alberta are the highest?), but it probably adds a good 1m to 1.5m AAV to his take home versus contract value.
