Imagine if we just kept him and flipped NY the bird (I know Kane has a NMC…)

You’re allowed to put conditions on guys who aren’t even on your team? Huh?

So we got the Rangers 3rd.

If the conditions are met for NYR to get the DAL 3rd then we get the better of the 3rds.

Am I right?

Seems like a weird condition to negotiate, as both teams are likely to finish around each other in the unlikely event Lundkvist kills it next year.

Or is it the 4th we get unless the conditions are met? :dunno:

Seems to be unambiguously the NYR 3rd with the option to swap if somehow the condition on the Dallas pick comes through AND the Dallas pick is better.

The swap option wasn't there prior.

A 3rd, even in 2025 is more than typical for this amount of cash retention on Kane. Historically it would be a 5th.

Waiting to see the full trade details if Arizona is including some small asset to bump up the return, like Minnesota did with O'Reilly and Orlov.

There's also the wrinkle that the Ranger's 4th round picks are likely encumbered until 2026. So getting a 4th for the retention was off the table.

Quoting myself: so Arizona did include an asset in the trade: RFA rights to Vili Saarijarvi going to Chicago.

I don’t know what his rights might be valued at? He‘s not signed to a contract—so including him isn’t freeing up one of the 50 contract slots. Apparently Chicago must have placed some value on him.

He wasn’t great for us in A years ago. Has apparently taken a step forward overseas. What is he though? Good AHLer now or bottom pairing D? Not a BA asset so just get a pick.

Saarjarvi is a minor leaguer turning 26 this year who likely isn't signed. He's a smallish PMD with good skating and a hard shot. He's mostly just too small and weak to be able to handle the NHL. At best a PP specialist, as his play in his own zone isn't the greatest and he can be a liability as a defenseman. Probably won't ever see time in the NHL though.

We also got him from the Comrie trade back in 2019 so overall means pretty much nothing.
