We REALLY want to collect picks WAAAY out in the future, huh? Gotta be a war chest strategy.
Most GM's will give a future pick away because there's a good chance they won't still be in a job to suffer for not having them.

I love that BA has the security / long leash to where he's thinking about the young players he'll be developing in 2027.

I think it's closer to $250K or so.
$2.9 million in actual salary. 2022-2023 season=186 days with 44 days left until the regular season concludes.

44/186=0.23655913978

$2,900,000 * 0.23655913978 = $686, 021

Coyotes responsable for 25% retention which is $171,505.

Compensation at most would be a 4th round pick, likely much lower.

Well they got a 3rd. I don't know what to tell you.

A 3rd, even in 2025 is more than typical for this amount of cash retention on Kane. Historically it would be a 5th.

Waiting to see the full trade details if Arizona is including some small asset to bump up the return, like Minnesota did with O'Reilly and Orlov.

There's also the wrinkle that the Ranger's 4th round picks are likely encumbered until 2026. So getting a 4th for the retention was off the table.

Sorry if I’m being dense, but what for “facilitate” mean in this context? Are the Coyotes somehow able to take on some of the Rangers cap, and we get a pick in return? And is there a precedent for taking cap without even having the player’s contract? Thanks.

That's exactly what it means, yes.

Technically, Kane was traded to us at 50% retained. We retained 50% more, and then traded him to New York. New York gave us a pick, then gave Chicago two picks. Therefore, we take on a total of 25% of Patrick Kane's cap hit, and get a pick for our troubles.
