If our coaches can finally teach defense, well even then I don't know about contender but more like challenger. Baby steps.

Projected lineups:

JVR-Bozak-Kessel
Lupul-Kadri-Clarkson
Komarov-Holland-Frattin
Bodie-Kontiala-Santorelli
Orr

Phaneuf-Polak
Gardiner-Robidas
Rielly-Granberg
Franson

Bernier
Brodeur

I can easily see that lineup going deep into the playoffs.

Good lord at those 4 Centers! :(

You guys forget that Carlisle will have new assistants to change our system. Only reason we collapsed is we played a corsi-poor style. If Carlisle changes his style we can go deep

OMG enough with this "corsi style" BS. That wasn't why we collapsed.

it was because Carlyle doesn't know his dick from his ass when it comes to coaching and the team quit on him.

The team didn't play any differently the entire season , our goaltending just came down to earth and weren't able to steal us games like they did for 3/4 of the season .

The Leafs have been "a small tweak or two" away from Lord Stanley for 47 years.
And will be for another 47.

The offseason is when optimism always runs highest for Leaf Nation until reality sets in with the regular season as the results start coming in. That happens for a lot of fan bases also so we're not alone in this situation.

On paper this might be one of the weaker line-ups we have iced in a while. However lots of unanswered questions and the belief that at least it should be harder working and willing to compete more blue collar effort nightly might see a small bump in success.

Last years team of 84 points in 82 games was just 2 games over .500 and so improvement on that shouldn't be impossible even with less talent.

That's not over .500.

Seriously ??

82 games in a season total available points = 164 points.

84 points of 164 max obtainable = .512

That is indeed over .500.

We do recognize .500 doesn't mean what it used to.

Nice to see the Leafs have made some low key moves.

They have their 1st. line, now if they can build supporting lines out of:
kadri, Komarov, Kontiola, Clarkson, Lupul, Santorelli they just might be respectable.

38 + 36 = 84.
The NHL plays an 82 game schedule.

Games over or under .500 is determined by deducting regulation losses (in which you earn 0 points) from wins where you earn 2 points. The difference is your games over or under .500 record.

OTL = 1 point is awarded and 1 point of possible 2 points = .500 points obtained so they're excluded from the games over/under .500 calculation. Leafs had 8 OTL for 8 points and 38 wins (76 points) = 84 points total

However 38 wins - 36 reg losses = +2 games over .500

A team could actually lose every single game and go 0 - 0 - 82 OTL and because of the loser point awarded by the NHL that is actually .500 hockey of a team earning 82 of a possible 164 points.

Leafs obtained 84 points last season, and you needed 93 points to secure a playoff spot in the East. Last years bottom 5 (draft lottery) position was 79 points.

Leafs finished -9 points out of a playoff spot and +5 out of the bottom 5 draft lottery. They were closer to the draft lottery than the playoffs.

Did this summers moves take them closer to the playoffs or a top 5 pick in the next entry draft?

82 points in 82 games is .500 hockey.

&

38 wins and 36 regulation losses = 2 games over .500

Come on Mess...
If we calculate .500 that way (the fake way), then there were only FIVE teams out of 30 that were under .500
Five.

A much more logical way to calculate .500 is comparing wins to losses. ALL losses. The end. Then .500 means what everybody understands it to mean in every other situation in the world.

If we're going to calculate .500 the fake weird way, it's nothing to cling to as a positive given just about EVERY team in the league is above the fake .500

I guess .500 is the new .450.

Being over .500 used to mean being above average. Now it means nothing.
