I'd imagine UMass-Lowell usually play a tight defensive system (even by NCAA standards) because they probably don't recruit a lot of high-end offensive players.

No they don't.
In looking at both Odessa and UMass-Lowell, it's clear that Hellebuyck was the superior goalie on those teams. In both cases, the statistical comparison isn't even close.
I'm actually of the belief that Hellebuyck will be a good NHL goalie. Still way too early to tell though but I think the Jets have a real steal with him.
I remember reading one NHL scout saying after the 2012 draft that he could be the real deal in a few years. Big, mobile and determined to succeed. Those are all three things you want in a future #1 goalie.
