"Caufield would have a few practice days to take a step back and start working on specific technical aspects of his game. Rocket coach Jean-François Houle wanted, among other things, to encourage Caufield to think beyond his offensive game, and to impart to him that good defensive play often leads to scoring chances."

Oh Boy ...

A Byron with Caufield's ability to put the puck in the net would be deadly!
That's the thing.

He will NEVER be a serviceable 50ish points two way forward.

He will either be an offensive catalyst, or a specialist like Galchenyuk. My instinct for development would be to first create a separation beween him and Galchenyuk and worry about rounding out his game later.

It's funny no one even talks about Byron but our PK is f***ing atrocious since the start of the season and I'm pretty sure Lord Byron could seriously help in that department.

They should just trade him. I'm not joking, if they want to turn him into a generic two way plug and use him on the bumper instead of as a shooter they're just going to ruin him. Just trade him for a guy that's already gritty who they won't try to mess with all the time.

I didn’t watch the Laval game but quotes like this and hearing they used Caufield in the bumper position on the pp instead of in a shooting position where he could score goals and grow his confidence is frustrating.

I've talked about it a few times. When you looked at the offseason acquisitions, none were about helping the PK. The 2 most used forwards last season were Danault and Byron (by a large margin) and we already had a weak PK so it's easy to be worst this season. And I'm not talking about Weber vs Savard yet.

That said. Some teams have their best forwards playing on the PK and they often do well. I'm not sure if Caufield should play on it. I don't think we're playing him in his strengths

Players like Caufield and Galchenyuk… we just don’t seem to be able to develop these guys.

It’s early days but I hate the whole defense fist thing we do with some of these players. Not all players are cut from the same cloth. We spent so much time trying to turn AG into Brendan Prust… I hope it doesn’t happen with this guy.

What could go wrong with taking an offensive juggernaut of a player and telling him to play D to create scoring chances? I mean it works so well for all the defensive centers in the league :sarcasm:

We won't find common ground on Galchenyuk, because IMO he was just not a smart hockey player.

In Caufield's case, though, yes. Rounding out his game should absolutely not be a priority right now. I hope I exaggerate the meaning of this quote. They've spoken a lot about a the need of him getting puck touches, getting his timing right etc. Hopefully I'm misinterpreting the whole situation.

Man these people really don't get it. Not that I know it all but come on now he's 4 feet tall just put him in a position to rip pucks and figure it out

Just wow. Killing the offence again. So rinse and repeat now that Bouchard is gone. This organization is just awful. Brett hull would have been a 400 goal guy if the habs had their claws on him.

So is it Timmins crappy drafting or is develooment playing a role in why we jave no drafted players on the big club..i am still leaning toward development issues.

I'm not saying that Caufield is going to be a Kovalchuk type of player, but Kovalchuk have been a pretty two-way player with NJ Devils and play very amazing hockey.

With speed of Caufield, he can be good at defensive zone and it's not bad at all. He have all tools at offensive zone to product points... i'm not worried about him.

He is going to be a another Cammalleri for Habs and this is pretty great to have another Cammalleri type of player.

Correct me if I am wrong but he was playing for Wisconsin and then was brought up and signed in I think spring of 2021? Thats a very small yet successful sample size. Since he is 20 and a very undersized player he needs more seasoning. I don't think the sky is going to fall in- he just needs more time to be roughed up and experience the struggle which he should as a young player. It's like in any industry you can't become the CEO until you put in the time and experience some struggle. It makes you mentally tough and leads to some appreciation for your profession to see everyone grinding away in the A. He will hopefully come back as a humble and stronger player.

Caufield looks kinda lost out there. It's pretty much the first time in his hockey career at any level that he's had a dry scoring spell and you can tell he doesn't quite know how to react. This is where the coaches need to come in and help a young player find solutions. Hopefuly the organization is working with him.

They are putting him in the bumper spot, so I would say they are making it harder for him to come out of it than it needs to be.
