If his play is suffering because he has contract stuck in his mind then perhaps it is time to start playing for the team rather than for himself

Or maybe, he is just mentally fragile?

Either way, it is easy to list excuses

he is having a bad year, people need to stop panicking. also, you don't trade assets at their lowest value.

This is very important and needs to be emphasis. Nothing irked me more than hearing people want to ship Kadri out when he was struggling. It's like the market, buy low and sell high if needed. Burke did this very well in his time here.

great offence, a physical hitter, great skater, but good for one bonehead play each game it seams.

wasn't like this in the playoffs. he was very reliable. I say lessen his minutes but be patient with him.

Really? You think Franson is a great skater?

I agree that he can hit and shoot, but that's about it. I rather have a solid shut down D than Franson right now. We don't need help putting pucks in, we need help keeping them out.

He an RFA. Do you find him a new home in the summer, or do you re-sign him? If so for how much/how long? Would Franson take this deal?

that post was from more than half a year ago..
and i still stand by it, except for the "not bad defensively" part

he has top notch offensive abilities + is really physical. If he was average or slightly below average defensively he would still be a top 4 guy imo. But he has been down right awful defensively this year for whatever reason

wouldnt surprise me if he flourished greatly on another team, or even if he turns it around next year

I'm with you......he is a large D man who is slow....he is not having a great year and makes mistakes (news flash.....so do all of our D man) he is the flavor of the month for d man attacks. Fraser, Ranger, Gardinar and now Franson. I like Ranger but he makes more poor decisions then Franson but is slightly faster. Gardinar is young and talented and should not be moved.

Frason is struggling....Reason as to why:

Different playing partner weekly.
Played a majority of the season with a young partner.
Playing for a contract.

His play in the playoffs last year makes me believe that he is a lot better then he is currently playing and that the pressure of playing for a contract and not having a consistent partner is hurting his play. Leads the league in hits.....has the most points as a D man on the PP despite the fact that his partner on the PP is not having a great year.

I'm in the keep him a trade him when his value is high and that will be next year after signing him to a reasonable deal based on his play this year....if he plays well in the playoffs again his value with increase. You can not find big D man who hit and can play an offensive role very easily...

Ranger this year struggled playing sheltered minutes.....Franson is paired up against vastly superior opponents....be careful what you ask for.

This guy is an absolute turnover machine. SO many risky passes, all the time. He makes passes that shouldn't be made, struggles with simple plays and then doesn't have the speed to make up for it. I would move this guy in a heartbeat.

This is a player that's just not capable of top 4 minutes on a consistent level.

Great bottom pairing guy; but doesn't look like he's made for the top4.

Our defence core is young. I'm willing to be patient with Franson.

Heck Matt Niskanen just pulled a complete 180 at 27 years old. Not asking Franson to do that, but I don't think its unreasonable to think he can improve defensively and play a little more like he did last year.

How much do you value Cody Franson?

Our top 6 D.

Carl Gunnarson - Dion Phaneuf
Morgan Reilly - Tim Gleason
Jake Gardiner - Cody Franson

Gunnarson-Phaneuf They have been good all year... Maybe their not an elite 1st pair but their good enough top 4 d-man that they are easily are most consistent pair... Their both going to be here after the trade deadline.

Morgan Reilly-Tim Gleason. Reilly is our prize possession, he's not leaving. Tim Gleason has been nothing but great since acquiring, he's everything we have needed and more, he is staying as well. This leaves Jake Gardiner and Cody Franson...

Cody Franson - Jake Gardiner - Gardiner has been pretty good all year long, he's not taking as many chances but he's also not making as many notable mistakes... he has great upside and is still young. You could make a case for trading him because we have Reilly, Franson and Phaneuf who can put up points but the reality is it will be difficult to find fair value for him... Franson is the guy I would like to discuss...

Cody Franson He's been awful this season, at least defensively. He has been a give away machine all season long... but last year he was simply great... Franson was huge in the Boston serious, possibly our best d-man in fact... he also scores a ton of points. Could Gardiner or Reilly fill in on the top PP unit and fit in immediately? Gardiner and Reilly are both offensive minded d-man but Franson is already doing it on the PP, he's our biggest point producer on the 2nd best PP in the NHL. Is he expendable? Would you trade him if we could upgrade with someone more defensive minded? Sometimes you don't no what you have until its gone I was just curious how others value Franson and how you see him fitting in long term.

He should be valued as a bottom pairing D man who gets powerplay time. I don't think his salary demands will reflect that however.

Problem is he's a righty, which gives him inflated value right there.

Something about franson that makes me hesitate to move him. He's a big boy with nice hands. You can teach him d. I'm site I'll get blasted for this but I'd almost prefer to move Gardiner.

His offensive contributions aren't worth his bad defense. It's going to be an addition by subtraction.

Luckily, it seems like Carlyle is finally figuring it out and reducing his ice time.

Keep him as #7Dman unless you can find an upgrade. Get rid of him in the offseason.

i'd move him for the right offer, which probably won't materialize due to our cap issues, so we probably let him walk end of the year for nothing and granberg takes his spot next season

Our team looks so much better with Franson playing less than 15 minutes.

I really hope we get rid of this guy. He's not that good and he's always a pain in the offseason.

Seriously!! The guy has to go. He is horrible reading plays and even slower to react. He gets beat on the outside nightly and has horrible pass attempts that lead to turnovers. He can never stop the puck at the point and brutally crappy hand eye. Leaves his coverage for whatever reason, leaving a man open in the front and cannot stop passes that happen right in front of him. He plays like a young kid learning defense, and by that I mean he watches the puck one on one and gets beat . Sometimes he realizes that he has to play defense and hits the opposing player perfectly but then slow to react to the play afterwards. Sometimes he hits a guy along the boards but leaves his partner in a 2 on 1 situation. Franson is garbage and a liability, when will Carlyle and Nonis wake up and trade the bum for a true defensive defense man to play with Gardiner.

Hopefully adding another top 4 D in the summer will help us all appreciate Franson for what he is, a bottom pairing pp specialist. If we can limit his ES minutes, and he can still produce like his usual self on the pp, I think we'll all come back to appreciating him again. He's too slow to be playing any meaningful minutes.

Addition by subtraction. Thats how I value him at this point.

If Cody didn't want 4x4 , and would be satisfied with third pairing minutes - I would gladly keep him - have him solidify that third pairing. But he doesn't and won't. And truthfully - I'd rather sign McDonald in the offseason [whatever money he wants, if he's good enough to play top 4 minutes on the Island, he can do it here(ish).

Nonis seems like someone who will cut bait. He didn't think Franson was worth it last season - I doubt the fact he sat out training camp, and played like poop in top 4 situations won't change that fact.

If we could get a more reliable top 4 D man back, in the Gleason ilk, I would deal Franson. Franson has value on the PP, but he is far too much a liability on the backend to trust in a 7th game in the playoffs.
