I really don't know what the difference is. Quinn seemed like the main man all along.

Yeah Quinn was "1A", but it also seemed completely obvious (and Oilers later admitted) that the concept was that Quinn would do maybe 2 years and then Renney would become head coach.

Can't see the same situation with Krueger here.

We're used to teams having the HEAD coach who takes the brunt of the success and blame, but it's not impossible to have co-coaches. They'd just really have to be on the same page, if there's any mixed messages, it's doomed to fail.

Has there ever been co-head coaches other than little league where one father works shift work?

One thing with this team, I don't believe there has ever been a completely new coaching staff - ever. It's always been assistants/associate coaches promoted to head coach, or only the head coach was changed and the assistants stayed on.

IF/When we make another coaching change, I'd like to see a wholesale change - a clean slate for the new guy coming in.

You have to think a guy like Maurice brings that up in an interview, no?

I wonder if he's been told come in and you'll have a shot at being head coach. If it turns out that all Ralph needed was some help then we will let you go when another job comes along?

I just can't wrap my head around why he'd take the job otherwise.

Exactly.

So Krueger gets promoted to head coach, but isn't allowed to pick his own assistants.

Now we're looking at an "associate" coach, but do he and Krueger get a chance to pick assistants?

I just don't get the logic here in co-coaches. And how does Krueger feel about this?

Paul Maurice. Because he did such an awesome job in Carolina and Toronto.

I would rather get Eakins, but I suspect he goes straight to a head coaching position where he can actually pick his staff. Imagine that.

That was one of my questions.

I wonder if he feels threatened by it or happy. I know it is a bit of a different situation but Red Wings hired Renney as a associate coach with Babcock..

I think the role is just to help analyze situations and be an extra opinion in the coaching staff.

If Edmonton brings in a relatively new coach like Eakins I don't see Krueger having a problem with it but if they bring in a more established coach like AV, Tippet or Torts as an associate I think that Krueger would have to be feeling the heat.

I imagine that Krueger is on board with it.

Recall that when Craig Mactavish brought in, he said that he needed to have a discussion with Krueger on coaching.

I believe that discussion has been had, mact and Krueger are on the same page, and that one of the end results was that the coaching staff (Krueger, Smith, Buchberger) needed a veteran hand. Paul Maurice or Bowness would fit the bill.

I'm guessing that Krueger would have to be part of the interview process.

I don't think an associate coach is a co-coach. Associate might be second in command, between head and assistant.

The one thing I don't understand is why the Oilers didn't let Krueger pick his own assistants in the first place.

I am in support of bringing in an associate with extensive NHL experience but it's so Oilersy to not let him pick his own assistants and make them 2 former Oilers instead. Now I may be completely wrong and he decided to just keep those two on but I wouldn't bet on him even being given the option.

Which means what? He gets to pick what type of beer they drink for when they sit down and watch footage?

No, that he would probably run some of the practices and speak up at intermission more and generally have more impact/authority/respect amongst the players. I have a feeling Bucky isn't exactly that right now.

This combine interview with MacT makes it sound like there are going to be coaching casualties. Says there are some internal matters being worked out when asked if the Maurice interview was for the purpose of filling the associate role.

The fact he said there will be an announcement suggests to me that we're seeing a coaching casualty. I can see Steve Smith getting the boot.

My guess is we are seeing Kruger getting that chance right now.

Hopefully the Maurice interview was a Krueger initiative going back to their ties with the Hurricanes.

I would hope Kruger was involved in the interviews.

Not only so he can make sure that whoever they are interviewing is answering the right questions, but so the interviewer can say "kruger, what is your plan in this situation or what is the plan if this happens".

watching macT at the combine today I couldnt help but notice how his glasses look like Google Glass style.

Made me think of a future where coaches where them and change their strategy based on info they are taking in immediately.

hmm, what the future holds eh!?!?!

I think that as you move down the totem pole everybody has a smaller but more specific job. Ralph is in charge of everything, then there's associate coach, assistant coaches, goalie coaches, skating coaches, etc.
