Is Bucky gone/on the verge of being let go, or is Smith the only causality?
Where has it been said that Smith is a casualty? Did I miss something?

I really don't know what the difference is. Quinn seemed like the main man all along.
Yeah Quinn was "1A", but it also seemed completely obvious (and Oilers later admitted) that the concept was that Quinn would do maybe 2 years and then Renney would become head coach.
Can't see the same situation with Krueger here.
We're used to teams having the HEAD coach who takes the brunt of the success and blame, but it's not impossible to have co-coaches. They'd just really have to be on the same page, if there's any mixed messages, it's doomed to fail.
One thing with this team, I don't believe there has ever been a completely new coaching staff - ever. It's always been assistants/associate coaches promoted to head coach, or only the head coach was changed and the assistants stayed on.
IF/When we make another coaching change, I'd like to see a wholesale change - a clean slate for the new guy coming in.
Exactly.
So Krueger gets promoted to head coach, but isn't allowed to pick his own assistants.
Now we're looking at an "associate" coach, but do he and Krueger get a chance to pick assistants?
I just don't get the logic here in co-coaches. And how does Krueger feel about this?
That was one of my questions.
Exactly.

I don't think an associate coach is a co-coach. Associate might be second in command, between head and assistant.
Which means what? He gets to pick what type of beer they drink for when they sit down and watch footage?
This combine interview with MacT makes it sound like there are going to be coaching casualties. Says there are some internal matters being worked out when asked if the Maurice interview was for the purpose of filling the associate role.

The one thing I don't understand is why the Oilers didn't let Krueger pick his own assistants in the first place.
I am in support of bringing in an associate with extensive NHL experience but it's so Oilersy to not let him pick his own assistants and make them 2 former Oilers instead. Now I may be completely wrong and he decided to just keep those two on but I wouldn't bet on him even being given the option.
My guess is we are seeing Kruger getting that chance right now.

Hopefully the Maurice interview was a Krueger initiative going back to their ties with the Hurricanes.

OT--------------
watching macT at the combine today I couldnt help but notice how his glasses look like Google Glass style.
Made me think of a future where coaches where them and change their strategy based on info they are taking in immediately.
hmm, what the future holds eh!?!?!
Hockey-playing robots!
Voot voot must. go. out. and. play. our. style. of. hockey. voot voot.
I personally don't see why they are interviewing Eakins if they are looking for an experienced coach to help out.
