The NFL rules are somewhat vague but they state it's not allowed to trade money for assets (players/picks).

Osweiler's contract is 100% guaranteed for 2017. His cap hit for 2017 is $16m. Even if they release him, the Browns still have to pay his $16m in salary and take on a dead cap hit of $16m for 2017. There are no future guarantees on the deal, so the Browns could for example keep Osweiler through 2017 and cut him after the season with zero future cap penalties or dollars owed.

If the Browns do cut Osweiler now, then it suggests an interpretation that the team never had any interest in the player, and was only trading $16m of real money for draft picks. Something the NFL has instituted rules to prevent.

The only party getting money is Osweiler. The Browns didn't give Houston any cash.

No money was exchanged, I'm not sure how else to state that. They traded a player and a draft pick for another pick, a higher one. The NFLs main trading rule is you can't trade down in value for no reason, i.e can't a trade a first for a 3rd because you're taking a hit value-wise for nothing.

As for "trading $16M of real money for picks" that would be completely wrong given no actual money was traded for picks, hence why the trade was approved by the NFL (teams cannot announce deals until the league office approve them). All that happened is CLE used its vast amount of cap space to procure a player from Houston and upgrade in draft picks. They would not violate any rules by releasing him today, next week or in September.

Now Clevelands saying they might hold on to him. Haha.

Brock has gone from heir to SB winning team, to mediocre Houston, to penciled in starter of the Cleveland Browns. And the Browns are saying they may take 2 QB's even with him on the roster.

What a hell of a downturn spiral.

The truth is he's the best QB on their roster.

And if New England isn't going to trade Garappalo for a reasonable price, then the Browns are looking at a very weak QB market. There's Cutler, Kaepernick, and some spares. Then there's the draft where they can't say for sure if they'll find the guy they like.

That's infinitely better as compared to what they currently have.

Osweiler wont be active for week 3 of preseason and it appears Browns are trying to trade him again but finding no takers

Browns were asking for 3rd rounder at draft but got no interest (Even offering to eat sizeable amount of deal for that 3rd)

Doubt they can move him at this point. Cutting him outright or keeping him as expensive backup are only real options

Jilting the Broncos for the benjamins will be the worst decision he ever made in his football career.

Although - he's going to retire before 30 a very rich dude.

He got a ring and then a big contract from Texans

He had no obligation to accept a lower $$ deal from Broncos. Also last I looked Broncos didn't make playoffs

Maybe Bronco fans should be concerned with that and current Broncos QB situation and not an ex-Bronco QB

Lol - good riddance to the dude. We would have had him for something like 5 years and 12M per. The reason I say it was the worst decision is that he probably had a very long piece of slack here in Denver - not so much in other place so.

The Texans probably saved us a considerable amount of money.

Fool me once...

Thinking Osweiler was a viable option after last year in Houston is nuts.
