McKenzie did say Rangers would not be part of the draft so it looks like some decisions were made this past week. Best of luck to Adam

Rangers Report

As it turns out, the Kitchener Rangers will be making a selection in Thursday's CHL draft after it was announced that Slovak F Adam Liska will not be returning for a second season with the club.
Liska had 12 goals and 19 assists in 62 games and showed a lot of promise. His minutes did wane down the stretch but that was due to the veteran heavy Rangers lineup and wasn't a reflection of his play.
Kitchener expected Liska to return and wanted him back. But his agent told the team this week that there may be some complications with his status for the upcoming season.
His Slovak club, HC Slovan Bratislava, also wants him to play and the Rangers were warned that there was a chance he might not be available to them.

With that in mind, and the CHL import draft quickly approaching, the club decided to make sure it didn't get burned later in the year and clear an import space. Liska says he'll be earmarked for the KHL next season.
The Rangers own the 51st pick in Thursday's draft. Import goalies are back in this year after a brief ban.

The news caught the team off-guard but McKenzie has been working his contacts and says his club will be ready for the draft.

Can we clear something up with this Import Draft?
If a team has 1 Import already on their roster that happens to be drafted into the NHL, they are allowed to pick 2 players.
Ex; OS has Sushko as an Import / NHL Draft to Philly.
OS can make 2 picks tomorrow, BUT if Sushko returns to the Attack after his NHL camp the Attack can only sign 1 of the 2 Import selections that they make tomorrow?
Is this correct, because some posts are leading us to believe that now each CHL team can have 3 Imports?
Thank you for any clarification on this.

You are correct. They would have to release one should Sushko be returned to the Attack.

My understanding is that you can only make a 3rd selection if:
1) your current import gets drafted in the 1st round
2) your current import signs an ELC with an NHL team

So if your import gets drafted not in the 1st round and hasn't signed yet, you can't take a 3rd import

Saxon pretty said they aren’t going to bother

I read the finer details of that rule. It's for teams who aren't sure if their players will be returning. Teams would have to eventually get rid of one of them. Samorukov isn't playing for Edmonton this year and there's no sense in him going to Bakersfield.

The ruling states as follows to my knowledge of the import draft.

You can only have 2 European players on your roster in any given year.

If your import selection happens to be an NHL drafted player in the 1st round of the NHL draft ONLY can you make 2 selections to compansate for the possiblity that that player may not return to the CHL club.

This year I've heard more confirmation that European goaltenders are allowed back in that would suggest that the original rule that if you pick a goaltender with one of your 2 import picks that you can pick a 3rd import player but the rule still applies that you can only sign 2 players to your active team roster.

If the NHL club decides to return the player back to the CHL you have to release one of the 3 imports on your active team roster.

If your team believes that they will have an import return they can elect to pass on their 2nd or both selections in the draft if they believe both will return.

That has always been my understanding of the import draft but with no clear rules to suggest otherwise for this year I would believe that those rules involving tenders still exist

The Firebirds are currently employing this clause with Winnipeg 2017 1st Round Pick Vesalinen. They picked him in Import Draft 2 seasons ago. He did not report. He was a 1st round NHL pick that following summer. The Firebirds were able to put his rights in their back pocket last season and roster two other Imports.

You have the drafts mixed up. The "if you pick a goalie you get a 3rd pick" is the U18 draft, not the Euro draft. The only reason you get a 3rd pick in the Euro draft is
1) Your Euro guy got drafted in the 1st round
2) Your Euro guy signed an NHL entry level contract

New rule this year....does not matter what round drafted into NHL...just have to be signed and you get extra pick....look at Owen Sound situation for verification
