He actually did a pretty good job until the last season when he went off the wall with some of his trades.
This roster has a lot of Chia players, so does our farm team.
Chiarelli did a horrible job from the get go. His first order of business was trading the 16th and 33rd picks in a stacked draft for G. Reinhart (who was in the process of busting). For most GMs (McPhee for example, with the Forsberg for Erat trade) that would be strike 1. But not for Chairelli, that was him getting started. A year later he would do the Hall trade. That should have been the end of him, but again, not even a strike.
At this point, you could see a pattern starting to emerge with Chiarelli. It was the same pattern he had shown in Boston, so clearly he hadnt changed. It was going to be bad news to allow him to make trades/signings. But because Katz has zero back bone and no clue hockey ops wise, he was allowed to make numerous bad moves
The only redeeming quality of Chiarellis tenure was the drafting. But I have always maintained that outside of 1st round picks, GMs dont have much influence and just rely on the scouts. But I will give him or the scouts credit for those drafts
