@ORRFForever, I feel like FIDE whitewashed this report and did not really address Nieman's cheating in a meaningful way. Also, Carlsen making chess more popular by his accusation should not be a factor.

I agree. They took the easy way out.

Magnus is not going to lose sleep over $10K but I could see him holding a grudge. Also, if Hans is ever found cheating, Magnus is gonna want his $10K back.

Who needs who more? Fide or Magnus?

"It’s not just Dominguez who has struggled, however. Second-seed GM Kirill Alekseenko, who played the 2020-1 Candidates, has lost two games and dropped 13 rating points. One game was to 29-year-old Australian IM James Morris. The other was to 16-year-old Turkish IM-elect Adar Tarhan, who opened with 1.a3!? against a player who outrated him by 225 rating points"

"Firouzja will play two classical games each against GMs Alexandre Dgebuadze (2439), Andrei Shchekachev (2506), and Sergey Fedorchuk (2546), in that order. The 20-year-old will need to score very heavily against the veterans, but the former 2800-star is clearly capable, and he will know if he can afford a draw going into the final game".

@ORRFForever The kid who played 1. a3 against a 2021 Candidate won! Chess has become crazy. I know Dominguez had to play outside the country and had limited choices but playing against such low rated opponents was dumb. He got .1 point for a win and lost 4.2 points for a draw. Firouzja organizing and playing against 3 low rated French friends at the last second is complete BS.

You can thank engines for the expansion of openings. Now, almost anything is playable - prep with engines showing players how to equalize. Plus, there is the element of surprise for White - since your opponent can't prepare for everything.

TBH, it's nice to see. Fun too. It's why Magnus has been playing all these crazy openings.

First I heard about Firouzja doing that. I really hope FIDE goes back to taking the average rating instead of the exact rating at the end of the year. All of this rating padding at the end of the year looks bad on the game, in my opinion.

Chess has always been tied so closely to politics, but they've made some huge strides toward making it a true sport over the last few years. This switch back to using a single rating list was likely supposed to be another step in that direction, but it had the opposite effect.

Chuky rules!

@Harbour Dog

They should just not rate it now. If Ali gets into the Candidates because of this, it will be a huge controversy.

Tough spot for FIDE, considering what's at stake. They have to have very solid reasoning to not rate those games, or else Firouzja probably has legal grounds to stand on.

Next cycle, they will almost certainly bring back the average rating over a range of lists instead of this single snapshot rating. I also hope they include some rule like requiring organizers to register a tournament a month or two ahead of time in order for it to count toward circuit points, to avoid this Gukesh situation.

I'm not going to shit on what they've done with the regulations for this cycle, because I can see that they're putting genuine effort into pushing chess into the realm of a true sport. But I really hope they notice and rectify these couple glaring mistakes before the 2025 qualification year.

I went for dinner with a strong(!) chess player, last night. We talked chess (our table was too small to break out the pieces) and Hans Niemann came up. I asked if he thought Hans cheats OTB. He said, "Possibly". I challenged him to tell me how. Neither of us could figure out how it's possible - assuming the players are wanded before the matches. Grrrr.

The arrogant ass (Hans) lost to an I.M. who mocked him in the opening... a3,h3, e3 - giving Hans the center.

Hans is an enigma. The question is : Is he a cheating enigma?

@ORRFForever I think it's dumb that a rapid and blitz tourney decides who goes to the most important classical speed tourney in the world, the Candidates. Only classical speed tourneys should count for the Candidates qualification.

I don't like it, either, but it's needed, my friend. Otherwise you get into a Kasparov / Karpov situation where they play forever and no one wins. :)

Merry Christmas to all the chess players out there. God bless you all !
