Ya. But it shows how sad thr Oilers offseason has been when all you talk about is Calgary.
Actually our offseason has been quite good.

Killed it at the draft.
Signed solid depth players for cheap deals

Not many rationale Oilers fans were expecting the team to big game hunt.

Anyways..so I was looking a James Neal's stats the last couple years and was quite surprised by something.

James Neal total points the last 2 season = 85 points
Milan Lucic total points the last 2 season = 84 points

What about the Neal played 23 games less part? Those 23 pointless games +trending down make Lucic stands out :naughty:

Also it always looked like the Oilers killed at the draft every year with their high picks?

Lucic played 21 more games. He also had a good year in 2016/17. That year wasn't the problem. It's 2017/18. Lucic also signed for more money and seven years.

I'd say five years is about the right amount of time to rebuild. The Flames had a horrible prospect pool to work with at the beginning of their rebuild.

As was posted on CP, the "Summer" lines being built in 2014 vs 2018 are staggeringly different. God Calgary was putrid 4-5 years ago. Note that Summer 2014 was before Gaudreau's rookie year.

Summer 2014
Glencross - Backlund - Hudler
Raymond - Monahan - Colborne
Setoguchi - Stajan - Jones
Bollig - Bouma - McGrattan
Gaudreau - Bennett - Hanowski

Giordano - Brodie
Russell - Wideman
Smid - Engelland
Cundari - Wotherspoon
Sieloff - Ramage

Ramo
Berra
Ortio

Summer 2018
Gaudreau - Monahan - Neal
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Bennett - Jankowski - Lindholm
Mangiapane - Ryan - Brouwer
Lazar - Dube - Czarnik
Klimchuck- Hathaway - Foo

Giordano - Brodie
Hanifin - Hamonic
Valimaki - Stone
Kulak - Andersson
Kylington

Backlund, Hudler, Monahan.

Only three players from that 2014 top 12 that would make this team today haha. (Assuming a time travel device).

Maybe Glencross or Stajan. I can't remember when they fell off.

Our top 9 is going to be loaded. Just need some of the youngsters to step up. Might not be a match for Nashville or Winnipeg though, at this point anyways.

We can worry about the Central in the 3rd round of the playoffs. The weak Pacific teams should be focused on the first two rounds.

I came to read about the Oilers and was not disappointed.
Adding another diver to the divey flames, how fitting!

Lucic also somehow only managed to get like one point in the last 40 games or something stupid, that will hopefully improve

Yeah and when they both suck in 5 years, one of them will not be under contract and the other will still be an Oiler.

Also, I'd take Neal 10 out of 10 times anyways.

I have to admit that Treveling gets a lot done. He probably is the most aggressive GM in the league.

It’s a bit early to say anyone killed it in the draft...

Definitely not afraid to make changes. They're not always for the best (Lazar, Brouwer) but he's seemingly always working on something

One of my base theories is “Belichek and Me”
You seek out the best high shift repeatable baseline system performance. Missing games is a performance issue.
Hall averaged 17gm missed per season in thevlastb3 years.
He was replaced by a #13-17 fwd in those games.
The team was .250 win% when he was out.

Neal is being compensated for the production he has averaged
He is a great add to top 125 forward depth. You need to get most of the season from him.

I measure a player by unit value (EV PvPor role
The measure of lucic has changed.
Goon had a value of .750 - 1.25m

Lucic first 2 years he starts with a base of 1.25m
Year 1 he was 23g 50pt 5.5m g scoring perf ($ per cap friend)
1.25m + 5.5m = 6.75m; +.75m
Year 2 he was 24a 34p 3.25m set-up perf ($ per cap friend)
1.25m + 3.25m = 4.5m; -1.5 m
He is .75m short of contract value over 2 years.

Goon value increase was evident this UFA period.
Lucic goon base is 2m moving forward.
2.00m + (18-19 cap friend contracts)
Top 90 fwd 20g 49p 5m
Top 120fwd 17/41 4m
Top 150 fwd 15/37 3.575m

Neal avg last 2 yr.
70gm 24g 42p, no PK, goon. 5.275m (18-19 cap friend)

Top 60 fwd 23g 57P 5.75m (18-19 cap friend)

Yikes, Tree at it again trying to solve his problems with a splashy UFA signing. Cmon Tree. Wise up.

I like James Neal. It will be a good signing, but like most UFA signings, you worry about the last year or two, but it is normal.

The thing I like about Neal's contract is even though he'll be in his mid 30's by the time his contract ends: it's not heavily front loaded, there's no signing bonuses which makes it easy to buy out in the last year or so and with his shot, I could see him at the very least being a PP trigger man even when his legs start to slow down significantly in the final years of his deal. It's an overall, good signing.
