over payment methinks. Scheifelle is a lot better btw. Stop arguing over everything. He's bigger, more talented, better 2 way player and better on the offensive.
The next thing flames fans will say is that bennet is better than nathan mackinnon.

How can he be better offensively if he's never outscored Monahan?

Well, wrap it up. We're done here. Legend123 has spoken and says that this is an overpayment. No arguing.

But its what everyone thinks. Everyone who watches monahan belives that except for the flames fans. He does rely heavily on linemates (Hudler/Guadreau) and PP.

How many points does he have that Gaudreau hasnt assisted on or not on the PP?
Anyone that thinks that is pretty clueless. The guy was a 20 goal scorer as a rookie before Gaudreau ever played a game.

Also in Gaudreau's rookie season he struggled until he was paired with Monahan, the two have chemistry no doubt but to suggest only one player benefits from it is an extremely short sighted and ill-informed point of view.

Also, how can he be bigger? They are both 6'3". Scheiffle is listed at 207 lbs and he's 23 years old and Mony is listed at 195 lbs and he's 21 years old. I heard Mony put on a few lbs this summer so I bet he's over 200 now.

You can't just make a bunch of ridiculous, baseless claims and put down another fan base, then tell everyone else to stop arguing lol

Mostly in line with other "young, coming off ELC" star players. Exception is slightly higher cap hit. Interesting that he will paid a little bit more than guys like Mackinnon and Barkov (IMO Barkov is better).

Barkov is also on a contract that will prove to be very good value, and less than he's worth.

This is fair for monahan.

Finally we agree! Wheeler and Ehlers are a couple bums.

ehlers has just 38 points? is that first line production?? Wheeler as many points as gaudreau. And ofc monahan relies alot on the PP for production. (20 vs 11).

And mark scheifele is +16 on the jets where as monahan is a -6. Says enuf

and monahan had 2 more points in eleven more games. Everything points towards mark scheifele

On the surface sure, but Barkov in particular will have a lot more "take-home" money because of the tax situation in Florida.

It's a fair contract for both sides. This whole argument about him riding Gaudreau's coattails gets really annoying. You do know that chemistry is an important part of hockey, right? You want your team to win games? You need chemistry. So what if Gaudreau gets Monahan more points? You WANT players to have chemistry together. And these 2 have clearly at a young age.

You make it seem like it's a knock on Monahan that he's found great chemistry with another great player. Who knows, maybe Gaudreau doesn't have as high point totals without Monahan finishing his setups. It works both ways and it clearly works well.

This is a great deal for the Flames. One of the best young C's in the game locked up for the majority of his prime at a great term and cap hit. Really there isn't much to not like.

How are Gaudreau's stats without Monahan, if they're not nearly as good, then they have really good chemistry. If they're relatively similar then it's closer to Monahan riding off of Gaudreau's coattails. Not that I think it's a bad deal or anything because I think it's a good deal regardless, but want to see how much chemistry they have

You speak for all HF board posters save for Flames fans? No. You are in a fringe minority if anything.

Monahan scored 20+ goals as a rookie on the worst Flames team in franchise history. Suggesting he is reliant on his team mates is nonsense. Especially when you have zero statistical evidence to back it up.

When in the hell did Mark Scheifele get so overrated?

One decent season is all it took for Jets fans to take off overrating yet another player of theres.

I guess it'll be Ehlers next year, and Connor(If its even possible for him) the year after that.

Great deal for the Flames here. Very similar contract to Mackinnon. Both are deals where they're fair value for the players that they are right now, and all it takes is a little bit more development and they become steals. And if both guys reach peak potential they're absolutely ridiculous steals.

That fact you use plus minus as an argument proves its not worth arguing with you. Worse stat in the NHL, and only even slightly useful when comparing players on the same team as each other.

Flames had the worst goaltending in the entire NHL by a fair margin this year, and a coach that had an awful, if not non-existent defensive system besides block shots. That might play a small part on plus minus.

Scheifele is also older, and was drafted two years before Monahan.

Now don't get me wrong, I like Scheifele a lot, I had hoped the Flames could draft him back in the day before he shot up the drank rankings. But it's not entirely fair to compare the two of them.
