Still don't think that list has a top pair that will fit in and sign with Columbus right now but I appreciate the list because it will be who the Canucks might be targeting as well.

Word is Bean thought he’d be selected in the expansion draft, much like we all did. Then he requested a trade, and the return was as simple as that — second round, 44 overall. Let’s revisit this in a few years.

So he requested a trade, which is a bit odd considering he was in line for a lot more opportunity if Hamilton leaves. Bit of a curious career move.

Sounds like he, himself, didn’t feel he was a good fit for the team and Rod’s style of play. Not exactly the attitude you want to see from a young player who should be trying to prove their worth and potentially push for top 4 minutes in the near future and PP time.

I’d have loved for Bean to blossom and become a dynamic offensive d man for the Canes but I’ll take a high-mid 2nd as another bullet for scouting to find a useful player.

3rd pair is open. Applicants step up!

Is Peeke still projected to be good? Feel like this is the opening he needs.
In thoery yes but he was extremely mismanaged last season IMO. He sat on the bench because Torts wouldn't play him instead of getting game time in Cleveland. He should have gotten more games in late in the season once they were out of the playoffs.

Columbus defense doesn’t look at the bad if the Jackets can sign a RD in free agency perhaps a Savard return to Columbus, or maybe Montour.

1st Pair LD Werenski RD FA Signing
2nd Pair LD Gavrikov RD Boqvist
3rd Pair LD Bean RD Kukan

Extra:
LD Harrington
LD Carlsson
RD Peeke

Gotta think Peeke is going to push to be in the lineup this year. I can't see him sitting behind Kukan at this point.

It is kind of funny he wanted out cause they weren't playing him much, when it's unlikely he is going to beat werenski and gavrikov on depth chart.

Wanting off of a cup contending team rather than digging in and trying to earn more minutes and responsibility is a good attitude then?
Fleury and Bean as a pair played a huge role along with Ned winning a Calder Cup, and they looked to be a big part of our future and they were obviously close as teammates. He watched both of them struggle to get their coaches trust, as well as himself. He’s 23 and they’re only now starting to give him some time out of a lack of options. It’s clear his coach isn’t going to want him on the third pair. He wants Edmunson or Haakanpaa on the third pair, Fleury wasn’t mean enough for that job for Rod. He knows he’s hitting the point of his career when he needs to play and earn his keep, and he knows he isn’t going to get it here. He’s watching his friends who were in the same exact boat move on.

It’s common sense to move on not a bad attitude and we’re not privy to what’s going on behind the scenes. He probably knows his future because it’s been told to him. We want to win now and our coach likes reliability and vets especially on D.

Of course he wants to win, he doesn’t want to miss his career. He’s of the age where he needs to make it now if he’s going to do well. Not every player has loved what’s happened on this team. If Rod loves you it’s an amazing experience. It doesn’t seem to be the same for anyone he doesn’t.

Is Bean better than Slavin, Dougie, Pesce or Skjei?

No, not by a long shot. Is he better than healthy Gardiner? Maybe but either way that means you’re on the 3rd pair.

I’m sure Rod wants all his players to be able to be gritty and hard nosed when needed and yes, on the 3rd pair that’s typically the style you see played but end of the day his job is to be a net positive on the ice and as a defenseman that means keeping scoring chances to a minimum.

Whether you want to do that like Zdeno Chara or Nick Lidstrom it doesn’t really matter, bottom line is Bean gets caved in when defending. We need someone on the 3rd pair who doesn’t allow that to happen as much.

Still trying to figure out why Francis took Morgan Geekie over Bean when he could've turned around and traded Bean for this deal.

Does he really think that Geekie is going to be worth more than Bean or a 2nd going forward?

I’m not arguing any of that. I was arguing you saying he had a bad attitude. :)

RF drafted over ten defenseman. Most of them could legitimately play in the nhl next year. Dunn seemed to be a priority and is a more advanced version of Bean, while the center position is a bit iffy for Seattle. Francis drafted both of these guys and knows them well, Geekie has looked pretty good overall.

So he knew them both and took the position of need. It’s more important that he gets the guys he wants at various positions for the season than getting a second round pick for a guy. That’s a secondary concern. He’ll likely get some futures dealing the defenseman he doesn’t think fit.

No - The most important thing is that any GM maximize the opportunities/assets that they have at all times. If Geekie can never play to the point where he could net a 2nd round pick in value in a trade at any point in his career, then Francis made the wrong decisions.

Geekie could easily be worth a second round pick by the end of the year, and maximizing pick stockpiles is not more important than icing a full team in a few months, the first in team history.

The idea that someone like you feels the need to preach the importance of picks/prospects to a guy like RF is comical. His work in these areas already speaks for itself. His biggest criticism was that he clung too tight to situations regarding futures and never moved them for veterans. I think he’s going to survive without your help here, and I doubt he’ll struggle to acquire futures.

I like Bean and think he will do well in Columbus

I was shocked then Francis passed on him in expansion draft as he would have been good building block for Seattle D

I know I’m late, but guys. Bean is not that good lmao. He’s got pretty decent upside though, so I’ll say it’s a good trade for both teams. Reclamation project players that were drafted in the 1st round generally get back a 2nd. I just miss those days where Carolina traded for and signed damn near every defenseman.

Requesting a trade from a top 5 team because you aren’t getting top 4 minutes because you aren’t top 4 caliber at this time doesn’t scream great attitude to me
Already explained that so I won’t repeat.

I don’t assume under normal circumstances that we’re a top five team. It was a weird year, let’s see how this one goes.

I mean, obviously NHL GMs know more than we do.

But also obviously, they make mistakes, and often ones that posters here called as mistakes beforehand.

An appeal to authority argument, if it had merit, would shut down the very existence of these boards. But since it really doesn't have much merit, we can carry on and have opinions even if they go against Ron Francis.

The job of a GM is to build a hockey team, not collect random hockey players.

You're the only one who said "collect random hockey players."

The job of a GM is to build a true Cup contender. When you're starting from literally scratch then you should be maximizing you leverage to get as many talented (young) players and draft picks so you can build a core group that can grow into that contender.

I don't think they will be going after another D until they figure out the Werenski situation (plus it gives them time to see what they have in Bean/Boqvist). I imagine it will be Gav/Werenski (not ideal 2LD) but they have chemistry and Gav can play that shutdown role. I'm more interested in what center Jarmo is targeting to play with Voracek and Laine as the top line? I doubt any of FA tho.

It is if it's your career and you want to make more money, which is probably what's going on. Can't fault anyone for doing that.
