I'm sorry, I'm not buying this crap. As I've said this before: Pouliot has the potential to be a COMPLETE 200ft Dman who is very good defensively, and excellent offensively. If he't not at least very good defensively, that pretty much renders him a 3rd pairing guy/PP specialist, and he should be moved. But I, and I FIRMLY believer the Penguins management (and Johnston) believe he can be an effective defensive Dman. He was on the number 1 pair for the playoff run in Portland and, even more impressively, he was on the #1 pair at the WJCs, getting the toughest minutes against the best competition.
No, I don't expect to be as good as Letang or Maatta or Harrington defensively, but he need to be at least very, very good (and easily a top 4 defensively by any team's standards). I think he can get there. The thing that will get him there -- which most fans won't like however -- is not only the rest of this year in WBS, but likely (minus a few call ups) all of next season in WBS, as well.
People want their new toy now. It's short sighted and it's not in the best interest of the long term development of players. Erhrhoff should be retained (with Scuderi and Martin traded), Maatta and Despres should get more offensive/PP opportunities along with Ehrhoff next season, and Pouliot should spend another year in the AHL.
I guarantee you: give him 2 or 3 seasons in the AHL, and the end result will be a Dman who is VERY, VERY good in the defensive zone. The hockey sense is there, but the experience and strength are not. Those cannot be rushed, they have to develop with time. There's simply no other way, sorry.
