Why make such a vague proposal?

Sure, we’ll send you next years first, Jake Kucharski and Jack LaFontaine.

No idea what prospects the Canes consider valuable anymore. Gauthier was traded for a minor league defensemen.

I was thinking 1st + Kuokkanen and Geekie, but that might be too much.

“Minor league defenseman”?

That’s a strange way to describe Keane. In his first year in the ahl he has 32 points through 51 games. He’s just 20 years old and is a pretty good prospect who was only available due to the Rangers depth on the right side.

He's still in the minor league. Has he been called up yet? (probably so), but Gauthier was supposed to help them secure an NHL defenseman.

“Minor leaguer” just seems like an odd way to describe a good prospect. I think of that as a guy who is ahl level and will never be anything more. Not a 20 year old who just joined the league and is doing very well.

Never heard anything about the canes trying to trade Gauthier for an nhl dman. Which team would’ve sent one in return for him? Maybe he could’ve been part of a package but on his own he definitely never had that kind of value.

Until Keane hits the NHL, I consider him minor league. Because that's where he is playing.

Most Cane fans had him pegged as part of a bigger package to get a good defenseman back. It seemed odd they would give up Gauthier one for one for a guy that probably won't help them out until at best next season instead of packaging him for one that can help them this year.

Vatanen for the lower of your two 1st. (Lower as in closer to the end of the round, idk how to word that...)

overpriced as a 1st for a rental.
God, I want 2 1sts or equivalent for Deangelo, but not only is he a better player, he's rfa so he'll get paid but you have a bit of control left.
Vats can just up and walk, right?

Also, Risto
he brings some positives but am I wrong or has he been a turnover machine as well?

Seems like Chicago could solve all their problems at once

Lehner, Murphy and Gustafsson for Gardiner, Toronto's 1st (heh) whatever else

Yeah. “Packaged”....he could be part of a deal for a quality NHL dman.

“Unpackaged” he’s worth one of the Rangers better quality RD prospects who is younger and expansion draft exempt. It’s a pretty even swap as of today.

Not sure what you’re getting at in terms of what Canes fans think of their prospects. It wasn’t a very “odd” trade to most.

It was a minor leaguer for minor leaguer trade. Gauthier was still by your definition a minor leaguer at the time of the trade. The Rangers having more room than we do up front doesn’t make Gauthier automatically a better prospect.

"Solves all their problems" in the same way as slapping 3 bandaids on a broken arm solving the problem.

The Canes may have been able to compete this year with a healthy Dougie Hamilton + Brett Pesce. Replacing them with Murphy and Gustafsson is a massive downgrade. A top-4 of Slavin, Murphy, Gustafsson, and Gardiner will get steamrolled by any contender in the East.

What really has a chance to solve the Canes problems is keeping Toronto's 1st and drafting Askarov at ~#15 overall. Given that Rod Brind'Amour himself said the Canes are 2-3 years away from competing he would fit that timeline well. Or draft Jack Quinn, Dylan Holloway, Connor Zary, etc. This Draft is incredibly deep with talent and the Canes value that pick highly.

You don't actually expect the Canes to actually draft a goalie high when "goalies are voodoo" (which is actually utter BS drivel) and there's end-of-career retreads DW could (sign/trade for) to block the goalie specs we already have.

The Canes just drafted Kochetkov at the start of the 2nd round and the Canes draft videos said they would have taken him at #28 if Suzuki had not fallen.

Swinging for the fences when you have two 1sts is a luxury afforded to a team in that position. Askarov is a stud.

Boston has some dee that may be of interest. John Moore or Matt Grzelcyk (they are both left handed thought) but they can play the other side. There is Connor Clifton who is a RD, just coming back from injury. Bruins would take a pick for him.

Risto sounds like a good bet or Vatanen, time is not on the Canes side.

Someone was saying he’s only played one league game since world hrs and appeared in a smaller international tournament where he didn’t look very good.

Really strange draft year for a highly touted prospect.

John Moore available and a friendly long term deal. Could easily be a top 4 on many teams. No room for him on our roster.
