Yeah, sure, but there are alot of days to count to amount to anything substantial and was more - in my mind - considered a figure of speech. If TDA manages to not get kicked off his final NHL team in his career he has improved and matured as a person. Or he'll luckily enough just not put in the situation to go completely bananas, again. Who knows when it comes to this guy, at this point?

Even given that is true... he's had run ins in Syracuse, Arizona, and New York with management. A guy can be liked by co-workers and still be a nightmare. It would just be something I would not necessarily want to invite into my locker room. It would likely be fine if you added him and if you're a top team, you probably have a locker room that can withstand it. Like how Sean Avery went nutty after he left Detroit, but in Detroit he had Yzerman and Chelios and Shanahan to keep him from acting too shitty. ADA just has a corrosive effect where he goes. Insulate him and you're fine and you're getting a highly talented player. Don't, and you're setting off a bomb in your locker room.

I don’t care about his past. The last 3 years is a sufficient sample size. He is older, at a different place in society being an accomplished star in pro sports etc.

You say that someone can be liked and still be a nightmare. The thing is, nothing points towards TDA being a nightmare at all.

And his on ice play is also proof of this. I don’t think anyone that doesn’t have a background in the game understand how disciplined and consistent TDA is on the ice. There is a reason for why his production and metrics are nothing short of fantastic. Sure there will be cough ups and bad reads, but for a guy that is as offensive as TDA is and play with as small margins as he does — they are really few.

The kid is a hot head and has a big ego for sure. But there are plenty of cancers through out history and I know very well the mess can create and definitely is of the mindset that they aren’t ‘worth it’. I am just repeating what Marc Staal said, everyone seem to think that he is an extreme nightmare but that is just not the case.

That's an interesting point. He's one of the first guys to go diving into a scrum, but he's only 7th on the team in his rate of PIM. And that's with over half his PIM coming from fights and misconducts. In terms of minor penalties he's not just more disciplined than Svech/Trocheck/Cole, but also more than Skjei and similar to Necas.

On-ice discipline doesn't seem to be the issue with him at all, it's purely a "stop running your mouth" thing.

Canes shouldn’t have any cap issues until 24-25, when guys like Aho, Teravainen, Pesce, Skjei and Jarvis are up.

The guy is a fringe-elite offensive talent from the blueline, but I don't see how any franchise can or should get past some of his off-ice extracurriculars (which, to some extent, seem to bleed onto his on-ice product).

In many ways this reminds me of the Curt Schilling situation in Boston/the MLB (if you'll forgive me taking this to another sport for a moment)... guy was clearly a HOF player and an all-time Sox hero but if the stuff about him that's come out in his post playing career years came out while he was active - I don't think I could ever root for him or support any team he was on - and that would probably extend to a sizable chunk of fans.

There's reasonable debate as to the depth of TDA's issues/concerns - and whether they go as far off the deep end in his present iteration as Schilling's, now - but an team willing to cope with the potential headache is probably going to ask for a 25-50% AAV reduction baked into his deal. Attacking D of his age are usually making around $100k-125k per point on their deals. If he were a less worrisome signing, that equates to a AAV somewhere between $5.5-7m... but given his history, my guess is he lands somewhere between $4.5-5.5 depending on term.

Fringe-elite as a PP pivot maybe. TDA is not one ounce better than Tyson Barrie who makes $4.5 million. He is at-best average in the defensive zone. It forces a team like Carolina to shelter TDA with Slavin while Skjei-Pesce does the heavy lifting. Against teams with elite 2nd lines he will not hold up (read: Playoffs). That will always limit his market. Unfortunate circumstance as an undersized offensive D who can't hold up defensively.

Tro is basically 100% gone. Nino likely gone as well. Cole gone. That's $13 mil right there. Bear may be traded. Stepan might not be back. Canes have cap space, the questions are just about who they want to keep and for what price.

Yup. Canes have some young forwards that are looking to graduate in Drury and Rees. Kotka will take over a bigger role and next year is the list of Staal’s contract as well.

Core is still well in place but there will be some tinkering for sure.
