Because I have a European time difference right now for games, I had some more productive things to do instead of watching this one (funny I’m even still up right now). Seeing Holtz only get 7 minutes and almost get scratched for Willman made me irrationally angry and now he only gets 7 minutes TOI. Absolutely ridiculous. Usually I don’t care much ab coaching decisions but this is so far and away the most baffling I have ever seen. Dudes getting KHL 18 year old treatment. I don’t even like Holtz. Most of y’all probably know me as his biggest critic. But he’s played fantastic and is just about the only Devil that can score 5v5 and it’s awful for his development to be stapled to the bench for the last 30 minutes of every game. The fact that Fitz is just complacent in letting this happen is insanity. It’s as if they aren’t even watching the games. Alex Holtz must’ve like f***ed Ruff’s daughter or something because I can’t even begin to rationalize the decision for playing certain guys over him in the lineup. Just absolutely infuriates me to no end when I see this shit happen

I agree with you, the start hasn't been great anyway. But Hughes/Hischier can win games on their own.

They need to pick it up, particularly defensively, for sure. But the fact is the goal needs to be treading water with them out.

The goaltenders are not absolved of needing to play good because our 2 guys are out.

Everyone has to give more. Not only the other forwards and the D-men, the goalies as well.

lol. I said it earlier but why the f*** are you even playing him? You’re not even giving him ice time when you’d need him. Like logically what reason could there even be to play him if you’re so concerned about his defense and don’t even care about his offense? Is he just supposed to be some PP2 specialist getting scraps of PP ice time here and there?

Sometimes I think some people are watching a different game. The momentum began to shift in the second when we started to commit to playing the body. Holtz is small and still looks like a boy playing with men

This team looked very very meh even with them in the lineup. There's deeper issues here. It's very evident now that there's no real cohesion...18 skaters trying to do their own thing is what I see.

No system at all. Look at Boston last night, tight checking, system and positional play, interchangeable parts, even Pasta and Marchand, everyone doing the same thing, in position, aggressively seeking puck posession, driving relentlessly, and the offense comes off of that system. Without Jack and Nico we simply must get on the same page and play a structured, determined team game or we are going to see a lot of nights like tonight.

He kept referring to a play over and over where Bratt missed the net on a good chance as an excuse as to why we didn’t have a good start. He also said he thought neither team had a lot of chances and that he kept mixing the lines to get something going.

He hasn't 'played fantastic'. This is what I don't understand about all the anger about Holtz's ice time. He has played like a guy who belongs in the NHL, which is a marked step up from last season, when he did not look like that.

He had an absolutely dogshit shift in the 1st where he turned the puck over 3 times. He nicely set up Hamilton on the PP in the 3rd. He made a nice read at some point, forget when.

If the Devils were missing wingers and not centers, Holtz not getting a chance higher up would make me much more upset. I'd like to see him in Lazar's spot eventually, and Nosek was a non-factor tonight and was also benched along with Tierney.

Like I said in the pregame if it didn’t actually hit the fan before the game it was trending that way. He created a couple of chances out there, but why bother doing that when you can hold the puck longer for the play to die like Bratt in the third?

Yeah I’ve had enough of Vanacek. After how pitiful he was in the playoffs, it’s clear he can’t hack it when push comes to shove. Team has zero comfort with him back there. Time to give Schmid some runway to find form. And runway means something like at least five of the next six games

Ripping the team for not trading for Helle when he didn’t get traded at all and his team signed him is just looking to complain. If he’d gotten traded that’d be one thing but you can’t trade for someone who wasn’t truly available.
