Keep in mind on the cap space that you don’t really want to go into the season capped out. You need room for call ups for non-long term injuries and of course a hope to add if the situation warrants it.

They'll be in LTIR all the way starting from the final day of the off-season so they might as well spend right up to the $85M mark prior to Ferland's LTIR placement because there's no cap advantage from being a couple of million lower. The roster moves that they can make to accommodate short-term injuries (< 23 on the roster, and/or trade away a higher salary and replace on the roster with a lower salary) will have to be made during the season.

It's not a "random" comp. It's the best comp I could find based on the production, age, years of service, and the fact that the contract was just signed 4 months ago. I included Barbashev as well in the 15-player list I made.

It's only "great" contract if Dickinson establishes himself as a high quality 3C who can take pressure off Horvat and Pettersson during EV time. Otherwise... meh. The best that we can say is that it's not a cap-crippling contract.

The best thing I can say about it is that at least Dickinson is only 26 and will likely be at least a useful NHL player and probably not fall off the face of the earth like all the 32-year-old bottom-six junk we've had in the past. But personally I think Dallas did well to get a 3rd round pick instead of signing this contract.
