After a rocky start (in which the goalie held them in it) the team improved. However, this only happened when they shorten the bench and stopped playing players like Bellerive, Revel, James, Whistle. (injuries and illness have really cut into the depth)

In general, the defense was poor - especially deep in their own end. Corrado (-2), Liberati and McEneny all struggled. Also the Edmonton point men were open all night b/c of poor coverage by wingers

Disappointed in Jensen and Gaunce. Jensen should excel in this company and didn't. Gaunce again looked slow and was way too cute with the puck (as were others).

Horvat looks NHL ready. Like to see more offensive upside but solid enough to see him in a third line role.

Shinkaruk looked rusty and needs to be a lot smoother than this. Some nice individual play but getting himself too tied up in traffic. Missed a couple of open chances.

Fox showed off his excellent release and game sense. His skating, however, needs improvement. Got better as the game went on.

Player that did impress me was Zalewski. Strong on his skates and good speed. Competed hard and looked good on the pk. Might be a better prospect than someone like Archibald.

Got to give Valk credit. Guy can put up the points.

The Canuck I'm most excited about after tonight is Subban, he plays just like his brother. Give him a few years to develop his game and he's going to be a real deal top four defenseman who oozes intangibles teams kill for.

- Biggest disappointment for me relative to expectations was McEneny. Needs to improve quickly between now and main camp or he'll be playing in the ECHL this year. Same goes for Blain
- Doubt Liberati gets a contract unless he improves miraculously. Not enough there
- Jensen...yuck. Same lackluster effort as last year. Slow starter hopefully
- Thought Shinkaruk was the best Canucks player and most of their offense in this game was generated by him
- Fox: Elite release and shot as advertised. Has good ability to find open space. Think he puts up 30+ goals in Utica this year
- Would've liked to see more offensive creativity from Horvat in a game like this
- Lotz and Valk were pretty good. Worth keeping an eye on

Coilers:
- I thought Yakimov was very impressive; probably the best player in the whole game
- Is it just me or did it look like Draisaitl wasn't really trying. Talent level was obvious though

Bourne confirmed Habs fan again :sarcasm:

I haven't even looked at their board! Though I can't help but think of PK every time Subban is mentioned here.

Speaking of, glad to hear Subban had a good game. I'm still confident that kid will be a surprise and turn into a legitimate NHLer one day.

I think he's just struggling to transition the way he naturally plays, which is slowing the game down to the point of standstill, kind of like Joe Thornton. And making plays while fending guys off along the boards-- Didn't really work the way guys were throwing their bodies into him though.

Draisaitl went down way too easy. Not solid enough on his skates. Big mistake playing him in the NHL this year.

All this talk about Lotz, ya he made a lot of saves, but I'd really like to hear what someone like Alex Auld, or Kevin Woodley thought of his game technically. If the goalie guild thinks he played well, thats a good start.

I hope Fox gets some time with the Sedins in the preseason, he knows where to go to score goals. Him and Shinkaruk will rip up the AHL if they play with O'Reilly.

Zalewski looks like he could be a bottom 6 grinder.

I think Subban will turn into a 13th forward/7th defenseman., PP specialist. When he makes the NHL, that role will be very important.

Was not impressed at all by the d core. Subban had moments but his overall size still shows in a negative way.

I thought Horvat had a solid game and definitely got better as the game went on. He mad 3 or 4 pretty effective set ups for some players but they couldn't convert from the shooting areas. If those shots go in people might be singing a different tune about his offensive game. I definitely think he's capable of playing in the NHL this year.

Fox has that great release and offensive instincts. He's definitely a player that could make some noise during pre-season and could definitely be a dark horse.

Shinkaruk was ok, he must be rusty as he kept fighting the puck but you gotta love his tenacity and determination in the offensive zone. Definitely leaves it all on the ice.

While Valk scored some nice goals I felt he was pretty much invisible out on the ice.

All other forwards weren't really that memorable for me. Zaelewski has some great wheels and forechecking.

Someone tell Horvat it's ok to take some risks offensively in a prospects tournament. do something please.

That's not his style... People here really don't know much about Horvat... He won't be that type of player, it's not in his game... He's not the best style of player to impress fans in a short tournament cause he's not flashy. He's the type of player that'll grow on you as the season goes on.

I dono what we can do with Fox, How can you have a guy with a shot like his not make the NHL team. Especially with a team who is dieing to have a pure shooter.

His skating is not that bad, his grit is nice to see, I hope he comes out of nowhere and makes it.

Jensen has the shot and can skate too ;)

Make my day.
All this will probably swing around the next game, it always happens that peoplevget too up or down early (talk of Lots contract off one rusty kiddies tournament game?). I'm going to reserve judgments one this tournament until the tournament is over.

Honestly none of these guys should make the team, need time developing, the only guy I think we should consider is Horvat and only because I think the OHL is a waste for him, too bad AHL isn't an option as I think that's what's best for him. Let Shinkaruk, Gaunce, Jensen and Fox all develop together in the AHL and have them for call ups. With Vey here I'm not sure Horvat makes the team and they'll send him back to the OHL, that Vey trade really doesn't make a lot of sense as we have Gaunce and Horvat near ready for that 3rd line center job with potential 2nd line center in Horvat.

I wouldn't put much into those numbers... But the point is right, he was never looked at as a star offensively, yet some feel like he has to become a new player to please them, its kinda ridiculous.
