He has a very high skill level. If OEL was insulated on a good team he would still be considered a very good player- problem is, like has been said, he's used in a role here that he's not suited for. We've basically made OEL a liability because of our lack of depth and awful pro scouting with Benning.
Doesn’t matter if he is skating like f***ing Dekyser. We can only hope that he has not recovered fully from his injuries but if he is not recovered, send him to LTIR and rest his ass.

No?

You pointing to one counter example (Gretzky) is not the same as recognizing that experience tends to offer more expertise.
It was a counter to your point of a surgeon who had watched videos on YouTube (or whatever.) A grossly simplified argument that miscasts the situation.

Someone might not have “played the game” and lack certain insights that an Yzerman (…or a Milbury…) might have, but there are also other areas where they may be lacking.

Gretzky was a great player, but that didn’t translate well into a coaching position. But it doesn’t invalidate the fact that someone like Gretzky could have valuable insights that could benefit an organization. Like his remarks about McDavid being the next big thing, well before people were talking about him.

But if we were to take your singular example of a YT surgeon, it follows the exact same logic as my Gretzky example (while also ignoring that managers, executives and leaders can approach the same situation in a multitude of ways. A knee surgeon is kinda, sorta, pigeonholed into that one particular niche and kinda HAS TO operate in a very specific manner. Hockey execs, as we’ve seen, do not have that limitation.)

Different people being different perspectives to the table, and being outright dismissive of them (like you were) is as much a disservice as putting way too much emphasis on them.
