Got to consider the opposition but team has been playing better and deserved the win. Maybe crawling out of the morass they were in but holes in the lineup still very evident. Also thought some lesser lights came up with good efforts

Good

Demko - unlike some other wins, it wasn't the only reason they won but still an important one. Aided by very sloppy finish by Habs. As a side note, saw little in Toffoli that I really liked and maybe losing him long term is not all that important.

Garland - pepper pot description is appropriate here. Again best forward by a good margin and just a pity others aren't coming up to his level and giving him more to work with. Seemed like team had chances whenever he was out. Deserves more ice time - especially on the PP

Hughes - in games like this you get to see just what a wonderful player he is. Better teams can limit him but tonight he was consistently controlling game from the back end. Looked like he was back in college with the puck all the time.

Chaisson - a view partly based on expectations but he was skating well and effective at both ends of the ice. Rewarded with more game time and got played late in a tight game meaning his efforts were not lost on Green. Again competition was factor but Chaisson looked NHL caliber in this game.

Motte - like Garland the little engine that could. Starting to make a huge difference on the PK and on the different lines he plays on. Has the speed to keep ahead of the play.

OEL - solid game from the back. Negated some of Montreal's better offensive players

Poor

Poolman - Burroughs - very poor puck movement and both getting beaten wide far too often. If you had two good NHL defensemen in their places, it would transform the team. Team is near always in trouble with this pairing out.

Others

Dowling - showed good speed in getting in on the forecheck. Nothing tremendous but did provide the team with some at least competent shifts

Dickinson - not so obviously bad but still losing too many puck battles. Black hole offensively

Boeser - effort is there but shadow of what he was in rookie season. I think he must have an injury. However, skating will always be an issue with this player

Pettersson - that shot brought back hope that somewhere in there is the player we once knew.

Schenn - Green just leave him with Hughes. Don't get your pants on fire if they have a few bad shifts or even games. If nothing else Hughes plays better with Schenn and you have nothing better to play Hughes with. They were a good combo in this game.

Podkolzin - again contributed. Liked him a lot better than Caulfield. Believe we made the right choice here and some need to maybe fess up that they were wrong about regretting picking Podkolzin ahead of Caulfield.

Horvat - made some good reads to break up plays and set some plays up but his skating is still limiting his ability to hang solidly and continuously in the play.

Second game ion two days and getting to the end of some time on the road and give the team credit for overcoming that. But in the vast scheme of things you wonder how much these kinds of wins will hurt come draft time. Probably Montreal fans were glad their team lost.

Well everything didn't go wrong for once. Toffoli didn't get a single point and we won.

Change is still going to happen. Cross your fingers Pettersson doesn't take another 9 games off.

Well never happen. they will however parade the "I told you so train" if a 35 year old Caulfied outscores a 35 year of Podkolzin

.
Need a lefty on the 3rd pairing. Neither of these guys is good enough to play on their left side, without Hamonic and Hunt permanently in the press-box.

Green and Benning need to help these guys out instead of trying to measly get by games with that pairing.

I really hope these idiots aren't thinking that finishing this road trip 2-3 would be any more meaningful than 1-4 or 0-5.

Also, game was boring as hell. Two bad teams hitting bottom. Not bad effort from the Canucks for the most part, but they're just spinning their wheels until the bodies start dropping. Fast forwarded through quite a bit of it.

I'm ready for the end of the Benning/Green era of Canucks hockey.

Anytime now...

The Caufield vs Podkolzin discussion is funny right now. Podkolzin looks better, but not for the reasons that I would have expected. I was really high on Podkolzin at the draft, he really caught my eye as a 17 year old at the u20 WJC for his bulldog hothead play. Seemed like a Landeskog type player who clearly had talent but above all was making an impact all over the ice.

Have seen him throw a couple big hits and get in guys faces, but he hasnt been the kind of agitator he was there (it mellowed out the next year at the WJC when he became captain). Instead he's looking way more like a skilled top 6er now, and his skating and shot have done a 180

Another win vs the Sens and Jim is getting an extension.

The habs lost: Price, Weber. Danault and Kotkaniemi from last season. No wonder we managed to beat them. They should just rebuild . The Cup run was their last shoot.

Only thing I really cared about tbh was seeing Pettersson finally scoring one from that spot.
Hopefully this isn't once a season kind of thing.

Good

Penalties and Penalty kills - Two penalties for the game. That’s discipline. Allowed only three shots on those PK’s and the first PK they didn’t allow a single shot.

No mental breakdowns - Their calling card is not being able to handle adversity and they kept their composure and discipline throughout the game.

This was a pretty solid win across the board for the team. It wasn’t perfect but they showed what their potential is last night. Now they need to take the day off they have tomorrow, rest, and bring the same game against Ottawa in their barn.

Should we open the playoff push thread or do we wait for another win vs the Sens? :D

December has a lot of winnable games. I think even this iteration of the canucks can manage to win half. If he was not fired after winning 4/13 games in november, i doubt he is getting fired untill april when we miss the playoffs. January looks hard and i see only 3 game we could win. Jimbo has more lives than a cat.
