That’s the only way to really get out a bind. When you are handcuffed with a couple crappy contracts , have limited assets , weak prospect pool , take a chance on low cost high reward players. I think it’s actually smart. Very risky no doubt, but only other option is to go full blown rebuild and trwde Pettersson Hughes Demko . That’s not an option so try this.
Its not as bad as using all your picks to acquire pieces now , where the values are inflated.

It’s nkt that we dont want him. It’s because he is the piece that has the most value at a position we don’t have a big need for. If we already had our defence slots filled and needed a top 6 forward ina big way , then Nemec would be available instead of Holtz. It has zero to do with Devils fans tryig to dump him. It’s us tryig to build a true contender and his is the most valuable piece to do so without creatimg a hole in the roster.
Holtz plus plus for Demko .

I feel like the way to ease the sting of trading away a 1st round pick for a player, is actually not to trade more stuff for a young player who has disappointed and had their drafting organization sour on them. Canucks fans wanted to see them pick 3 times in the Top-40 of the draft. Not pick up another reclamation project.

Still has another year, Vancouver might feel like they can charm him with a great city, if not then he's dealt for a couple 1sts at the next trade deadline. He hasn't had issues here in terms of his play.
They are in a hurry and don't have the patience to wait on draft picks. Potential reasons for that are:
1. Pressure from the owner;
2. That is the approach that JR and PA favour;
3. They have Pettersson whose bridge expires in a year and who is eligible for unrestricted free agency in two years and they are concerned that if there isn't at least some attempt to become a winning club they'll lose him. If they lose him it is very possible that Hughes and Demko will want out as well, there being rumours floating around about Demko already. If they want to retain Pettersson they probably can't wait on draft picks.
I don't like the direction, but think it largely involves # 3 (trying to retain EP40), possibly with some level of # 2 and more especially # 1 (Aquilini) in the mix.
