How's his effort level been? I rember back when he played for my hometown team, Oulun Kärpät he had uncanny work ethics on ice. Never looked lazy.

To me he’s never been a player with effort issues. I think fans are quick to say “needs to try harder” when the issue is something completely different. Whether he’s producing or not, Aho does more or less the same things on every shift.

I don't watch a ton of Canes games, but he is almost always the most noticable player on the ice. I'm shocked he's scoring as many goals as he is, but not shocked at his overall play. Kid is a stud.

He's doing great especially considering the slow start due to depression. 50 goals is not out of the question although I would place my bet on 40-45.

This must be a joke. A bad one.

Well, he did get off to a slow start. And I'm pretty sure I read on here that Aho really wanted to go to Montreal. So wouldn't Dundon matching the offer sheet induce depression? That's just math! :sarcasm:

His ES shooting percentage is high.... but I think it has a lot to do with him being extremely smart and opportunistic. It’s not like he’s scoring goals by just firing shots at the net and goalies are giving up weak ones or he’s getting lucky. He’s got amazing IQ, hand eye coordination, and quick reflexes so when there’s a weird bounce or a ricochet off the boards or out front he’s able to pounce and take advantage before others can process and get to it.

I don’t know if that’s a repeatable skill year over year because you can’t necessarily manufacture those situations on a consistent basis but it’s certainly something he’s very good at.

He will be worth all the hype when the Canes are safely above the playoff-line which is not the case atm.

He leads the league in empty net goals, and he has a career best SH% at ES (unsustainable) and on the PP.
Aho is known for being a bit of a SH goal specialist, so it makes sense is that he is always there when the net is empty. He will probably always have really high empty net scoring.

lol how have I never seen this before? Love how Risto has to process for a second and then just shuts up- he’s a thinker, that one.
Kadri seems to get in great chirps vs the Sabres between that and the one to Montour this year. Would love to hear him mic'd up when he played for us.

Im sure he will score 50 goals. He had again a slow start, otherwise he would have 40 goals already..
You can't really look at a players season like that. It's a very misguided way to view things. All NHL players seasons essentially have ebbs and flows where they have cold streaks and hot streaks. With elite goal scorers having maybe one very pronounced period. Aho's just happened to be very noticeable because it was in the first 12 games of the season only having 3 goals at that point. In comparison, Auston Matthews had a period in November and December, where he had 3 goals in 13 games. Pastrnak has a period in December where he had 3 goals in 12 games. Ovechkin had a 3 goals in 11 games stretch. The thing is, because Aho's struggle's happened early in the year, it was much more commented on and noticed to the casual fan.

The only situations where it really applies, is if a guy started off lower in the line-up, didn't get 1st PP time and then saw a dramatic change in usage that helped fuel the breakout, and you expect the change in usage to hold.

He was a one hit wonder. Because he played one good season, finnish posters on HF board hyped him like he was a three headed Crosby.

Carolina made the mistake to pay him big time. He is not worth the money and never will be. I honestly think they should trade him as long as some other GMs think he only had a slow start.

I will give anyone that quotes this after the season ends a free beer if Aho will have more than 20 points at the end of the season.

I would even bet on Haula having more goals than Aho has points at the end of the season.

Haula deserves his 1C spot. Or at least make Staal 1C and Haula 2C.

And no, this is no trolling. I'm absolutely honest about it.
Was this AB13 who posted this originally? :D

To my understanding, Aho signed that offer sheet because he wanted the negotiation to be over. For people who are not familiar with Finnish style of negotiations, that's about as Finnish style as possible. There was a story about different negotiation styles around the world in Business Insider few years back. Here's the story if someone is interested: 23 fascinating diagrams reveal how to negotiate with people around the world

Here's a typical USA business negotiation pattern:

Here's Canadian:

Here's Swedish:

and here's Finnish:

So the thought process in Aho's head could have gone "If I sign this, the Canes will most likely match within few days and I can resume to play hockey". *Aho reaches for a pen*
