Fans raise 20k while watching 50 guys making combined 100,000,000 a year paid by owners worth billions. ‘Murica.

...and the organization gets a $20K tax writeoff.

Only thing I would say is he's not trying to make the team, he's made it and probably doing everything he can, but also mindful of staying healthy for the regular season.

This isn't how 18-year-old kids think. At all. He's trying to impress, he's just not doing what some of the posters on this board think he should do. He's probably right and we're probably wrong.

Beyond that:
  • Foegele can't be sent down now, waiver status be damned. If they waive someone like PDG to make room for Foegele and a claim comes in, so be it.
  • OTOH, it would sure be a luxury to give Foegele a year in CLT as the #1 LW with #1 PP time, THEN see him next year. That's when we'd know we were in legendary DET territory in terms of our prospect development.
  • Isn't Foegele the guy that everyone was down on 2 years ago because he left a great college team and went to Juniors? How 'bout that.
  • I didn't see great/good play from Fleury tonight, I thought he was bad. But I'm a fan of his. It would be a luxury to send him to CLT next year to work on his offense.
  • Anyone else notice Martinook lift the defender's stick to allow the puck to pass through the slot over to TVR just before TVR bombed it? The defender whined to the ref for a hook, but it looked like one of those "little things" we hear so much about.
  • Darling: I, too, am looking for optimism with this man, but I can't forget that he had nights like last year. More than a handful, IIRC. But yes, he looked like an NHL goaltender.

I think I said "doing everything he can" didn't I? I'm not sure you can convince me that an 18 year old (who knows he's set for opening night) that wants a future in the NHL, and is probably hungry for real NHL minutes where it counts, isn't mindful of getting hurt in the preseason in a game where big hits are happening. In fact he got hit pretty good early in the game. That's different from your point that it's just his style of play so far. I think that plays into it as well, as he's less a run and gun, and more pick your spots type player.

I only watched the last period, so don’t have a whole lot to say about this one other than being really happy with where a few of these guys are right now:

- Foegele has come out of the box so well this season. It’s been a long while since someone stepped up and absolutely demanded a roster spot like that. I don’t think there’s any chance he’s cut after everything RBA has been preaching about intensity creating more-than-sum-of-parts results.

- Zykov’s success in that Holmstrom type role just serves to highlight how completely ridiculous it was not to have this type of player for the past several years. It’s not like we went and found a superstar. Just a guy willing to get in front of the damn net. It shouldn’t have been that hard.

- I’m glad Darling had a good game, but hesitant to buy in. It will certainly help him to be lighter on his feet — you can see the difference in the way he moves — but the test will be those games where the other team is really getting in his kitchen. I didn’t see that from Nashville.

- McKeown could make for some hard decisions sometime soon. I think he’s closing the gap behind TVR.

- RBA’s body language has changed in some subtle way. He looks like a real head coach, not just a guy who gets to hang out on the bench.

I’m sure I can’t, but it’s absolutely true. Boys don’t fear injury. Anyone with kids back me up on this.

Having coached kids his age for the past 8 years, I know there is zero concern of the hazards of life in general, much less the sport they play. Hell, one year we lost a kid for the postseason because he busted his ankle...turns out he was at a party where he and half the team were having a competition to see how far they could long jump off a trampoline into a sand pit.

Concern about injury is for old farts, not kids. Svechnikov thinks he’s bulletproof.

Foegele and Zykov both are what this team has lacked so much that my eye-test is convinced they are on track to be legit impact scoring threats in the NHL. Zykov is the immovable object and Foegele is the unstopabble force.

I’m willing to go so far as to say that Darling didn’t even look terrible. Looked more composed than his first game. I still like Mrazek and Ned as better options.

That's like comparing a used honda accord to a Lamborghini Huracán. He's in a bit of a different situation than your average 18 year old athlete. I don't think it's as cut and dry, but I do see your point, and I know where your coming from. I only have young kids, but I do remember being 18. I think I was still aware of self preservation, but certainly made some very stupid decisions. I think you take a player like Skinner who was an entirely different type of player, but also extremely careless at 18 in the NHL. He paid a big price, and missed a lot of games.

Svech obviously (to me) has a much higher IQ on the ice. He plays the game smarter, and he picks his positions smarter. If he's cautious at 18 years old against bigger, and stronger NHLers looking to lay him the f*** out, I see that as a smart play, and a means to self preserve. He wants to make as big an impact as he can (he's said as much), and you can't do that laid up with a concussion.
