He’s off to a good start in a contract year, but his numbers mask pretty limited usage by his coach.

Having seen the good and bad from Niederreiter as a Hurricane, this trade is still a massive W for Carolina, but much less of an L for Minnesota. Paul Fenton got roasted by hockey fans at one time, but his moves turned out to be a mixed bag of good, bad and meh.

Depends on how he does in the playoffs. If he underperforms again (3 goals in 29 Hurricanes playoff games), it will be time to cut bait like it was with Foegele. If he overperforms on the National stage, he’ll probably price himself out of town. If he’s somewhere around the middle, I could see him re-signing. The way the roster is constructed, they’ll just have to replace him with another version of the same type anyway. Whereas Trocheck will get the center premium on the open market, Niederreiter is ripe to be forced into a pay cut as a 2nd line-ish worker bee wing. A more valuable player in Saad ended up down to $4.5 mil on the open market, albeit on a long-term contract.

I’d be surprised if Nino is a Cane next year

He’s a huge luxury to be used the way he is right now. There are a few teams that could realistically use him on their top line, and I’m sure his agent is already lining up those phone calls for UFA day. He’s as good as gone unless something changes dramatically between now and then. It’s like the Lightning with Maroon.

This is one of the reasons we need to make hay while the sun shines with this group. It’s hard to keep plugging leaks in the middle-6 with actual talent, and we’ve already gotten a bit lucky with Jarvis and Kotkaniemi coming available, and Lorentz being serviceable right out of the box. This group is probably about as deep as it’s ever going to get, notwithstanding TDL action.

Isn't Rask signed for $4m a year? I mean, given his numbers, that still looks like a big old L to me.

$1.25 mil in cap savings for a team with a mostly full compliment of Top 9 wingers is not insignificant. Could they have gotten out of that contract cheaper had they waited it out? Perhaps, but no guarantee.

I don't understand your point.

For Minnesota to take a big old L on that trade, the alternative would have to be better in a meaningful way. I don’t think they’re that much better off with Nino instead of Rask given their roster construction and cap. Making a better trade is a just a possibility.

The initial reaction to the trade was that it was among the worst in recent memory. It’s certainly not a good deal for the Wild, but it’s turned out to be relatively insignificant in the grand scheme for them.
