There's an argument to keep Ward instead of Lack next year. If we should ever make the playoffs again, having Ward's playoff experience could be useful.

The only issue will be gauging if Ward can truly buy in to the concept of being a supportive backup and ceding the net to Darling in more ways than just physically. I'm not totally convinced that Ward recognizes that he's not starter caliber anymore, and having a backup that is disenchanted with being a backup can be a pretty toxic situation if personalities clash. Ward is a professional, but Lack certainly has that goofball personality that endears him to the other half of his goalie tandem. All things being equal, maybe you take the guy who makes the dressing room a little lighter. Plus, cutting the last cord from the 05-06 team might actually be a good thing for all parties. I wouldn't be upset at the decision either way, but it's a decision for sure.

I don't know Cam personally, but he's never struck me as the "crazy goalie" type. He seems like a guy who's pretty grounded and has his head on straight.

He's turning 34 this season, has battled through injuries in the past few years, has had some runs as the worst #1 in the league, and has played on a team with very little going for it. It's been a rough go, and the hockey world generally seems to find it remarkable that he's hung onto the starting job for this long.

I would be pretty surprised, and disappointed, if he didn't understand that the next chapter is getting ready to start. It seems like a professional skill for mature goalies to be willing mentors to the younger guys, and there's nobody more obviously positioned for that phase than Cam. It might be Lack, or Darling, or someone else who finally takes the baton, but he's not going to be a starter in this league for much longer regardless of how it plays out. If he's as grounded of an individual as he seems, he should be prepared to go through that transition.

This is my hope -- and my expectation, honestly. But we'll see.

Cam is embedded in the community and the health issues they have been handling with his son will probably keep him pretty humble in case he ends up staying as the backup. I know he wanted to stay in the area because of these issues.

Best case scenario, Cam pulls a Romo, takes Tripp's job and Tripp moves to the studio.

I'm surprised some think it was silly to trade a third rounder for Darling.

I love Crawford but I was in the minority that said we should trade him to give cap space and start Darling. Scotty is a great teammate from what I hear and a heck of a netminder. If it wasn't for him saving our *** vs Nashville in 2015 we would have never gone on to win the cup. He was huge in a high pressure situation. I think he will do well for himself.

I don't know of anyone who thought it was silly. Mostly, people were concerned about the prospect of not being able to sign him.

Would a pre-signed Darling have been worth a third straight up? I don't know that anyone would have disagreed.

Cam seems like a great backup for any team to have. The kind of guy who can come in and play well for a stretch if there's an injury or your starter has a slump.

If something happened to Darling, and you said "Cam's got to be the guy for the next 10 games" I don't think anyone would think "Oh well, there goes the season." Which can't be said for most of the backups the team has iced in recent years.

TFW somebody calls Mike Condon, Peter Budaj, Joonas Korpisalo, and Louis Domingue "more proven starter types"....:laugh::laugh:

Also, that Faulk thread where somebody compared Jonathan Drouin to Patrick Kane....time to start a Jaccob Slavin drinking thread.

TFW Rod realizes he's too old to internet

at least he knows how to use goggles

Edit: This is my first post in this thread, so I have to add that I'm good with this deal. I don't mind the money, although it's more years than I would have liked for a guy who's never carried the mail for an entire season. On the other hand, we needed to find a creative solution to our goaltending woes and this just might do the trick.

One thing about these types of deals that can't be overlooked is the mere fact that we cannot afford another $6.5 million goalie again....for a while. From a salary/salary cap perspective we should be fine next season, and probably even "okay" the following season. Things start getting pretty interesting in 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons. I believe we could pay the Top 4 defenders that we now have, pay Lindy a nice raise, but they we've got to take care of Skinner and Aho, followed by Faulk the next season. By then we'll need some up and coming rookies to man our 3rd line. GMRF will have to move some of these guys around and/or out.

Bishop costs less because he's such a wild card. Darling was very likely to sign with us, made it a little more expensive. Gotta be 50/50 at best for Dallas.

I don't think UFA rights have a set "market value" like that. Each negotiation is unique, with a bunch of factors involved that are never made public. Fans can come up with comparables for fun, but I doubt they even enter the equation for the GMs.

It sounds like Bishop said No to Calgary and prefered Dallas.
So if he doesn't allow LA to create a "bidding war" it's tough to get the price up.
At that point you just get what you can, where as Chicago had much more options with Darling.
