Is Qatar just here for friendlies/training purposes, since they qualified as hosts for the WC?
This is the Gold Cup, it's a non-prestigious CONCACAF tournament with no bearing on WC qualifying. Most of the major teams, including Canada, don't send their "A" squads to this, especially in a year where WC qualifying takes place a few weeks after the tournament and countries want their best players fresh for the qualifying games instead.

Oh my bad. I thought I had read this had some bearing on the WC qualifying. But the final group for that is already set, isn't it?

Canada wins and secured a spot in the next round. Next up is a game vs the US that should decide first place in the group.

If Haiti is carving up the defence that easy I would hate to see what Mexico or the US is gonna do.
Yep. just concurring how lost this club is defensively. Its really strange to me to see a Canadian National team so much more adept at scoring, but so completely lacking in back end. Historically Canada's backbone was solid defensive play. It seems an afterthought now. Against weak opposition they will get their scoring chances and goals, and outscore mistakes, but against any quality, look out.

I am very interested to see if the Qatari lay a suitable beating on the minnows of the group, and if Panama/Honduras goes full barnburner. Combined with NBA Finals game five, this is a damn decent summer sports Saturday.

I barely follow soccer to be honest but I heard Davies is injured?

Yes. Torn ankle ligament. It's supposedly not too serious though and doesn't require surgery.
It's a blow for Canada - but truth is, the Gold Cup is more of a warm-up event for the Canadian programme. The real challenge starts in autumn with the 8-team World Cup qualifying tournament. That's when Canada will really need its A-Team.
