To Toronto
Johny Gaudreau (retained @50%) this year and next...

To Calgary
Nick Robertson
Topi Niemela
2021 1st round pick
2022 2nd round pick

Thinking something like...

Nylander-Matthews-Marner
Gaudreau-Tavares-Hyman

Doesn't get you the center Calgary might want, but you don't take any money back, you get two excellent prospects and two quality picks and you clear 3.4 million in cap space this year and 3.4 million more at the end of next year.

In exchange, the Leafs take 2 quality cracks at the Cup, before choosing between Gaudreau and Nylander moving forward.
I'd certainly consider that. The issue is that Toronto doesn't have the space to do that. The value is about fair from a Flames perspective, just would require the Leafs clearing space somewhere else.

The Leafs have the space for the remainder of the season. They can also fit the 3.4 million under the cap next year and still extend Hyman, by doing two things.

1. Trading Kerfoot's 3.5 million cap hit over the summer, or allowing Seattle to take him in expansion.

2. Moving on from Anderson's 5.0 million dollar cap hit and instead paying a 1B goalie around 3.0 million to platoon with Campbell.

Toronto could absolutely ice the following team next year with retention on Gaudreau.

Hyman-Matthews-Marner
Gaudreau-Tavares-Nylander
Mikheyev-Engvall-700k
Simmonds-700k-Spezza

Reilly / Brodie
Muzzin / Holl
Sandin / Bogosian

Campbell
3.0

Your scenario works for next year yes, but you're incorrect about the Leafs being able to fit him this year: Toronto Maple Leafs - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

They may require a 3rd party (They are talking to San Jose and Chicago) to eat some salary for them this year in any significant deadline move. They might have to send 4th or 5th round pick out the door for neccessary double retention. I'd certainly do that for Gaudreau.
