By reading the posts in this thread I now believe that when the GM fires his coach, as Burke did with Rotten Ronnie..they obviously have a meeting (coach and GM) and decide whether the coach should be fired or not. Is that right? Because the GM and the coach are on the same level in the organizational chart. Is that correct?
Ludicrous.
Of course the coach has some input into player signings and drafts just like the scouts and player development personnel do. Just like the assistant GM does. Of course its collaborative. Of course. But the bottom line is the makeup of the team..the players that make up the roster are 100% the GMs responsibility and nobody else's..
Each position has its own job description. Their performance is evaluated based on what their job description is. So basically the GM to protect his job would make the final decision on what players will suit up for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Its not in the coaches job description. It is definitely not his responsibility no more than ensuring the team is within the cap restraints imposed by the league.
