Thanks for putting this together guys.

Gotta love those draft picks. I wonder how long McCabe will stay at Wisconsin for.

There was some recent discussion of that in the prospects thread (he indicated he wants to return for his junior year and I think insinuated he wanted to be there the full 4 years)

Isackson and Roo Adams are missing--since they went the college route, their rights are still the Sabres

I'm a long time lurker, and a first time poster and finally decided to join the dark side..

anyhow, wasn't sure exactly where to put this, but does anybody think with so many draft picks we may try and offer sheet somebody either this draft or the next? I know it's looked down upon etc. but right now sacrificing picks to get that sure fire RFA, now would be the time to do it with all of the draft picks we have. Thoughts? and no, I don't have anybody in mind, I just wasn't sure if anybody had touched on this and if anybody thinks its a possibility

The reason hardly anyone goes the RFA route is that the primary benefit of signing a free agent to big bucks is you're not giving up other assets to do it. RFA has the asset cost of making a trade and the cap cost of a (presumably) large contract.

It's just not the way you want to build unless it's a very special situation.

I understand the asset cost and so on, and figured it could be a way to try and pick somebody up if we find that player we want/need. Dealing from your strength. We have a buttload of draft picks the next 3 years in the top 2 rounds

I would counter that by asserting, if your team is a competitive playoff team and you have a buttload of draft picks, then you deal from your strength to take a shot at the brass ring. If your team has a distinct lack of talent, then you may want to use those picks to restock, and especially in this draft. I want every 2013 draft pick I can lay hands on if I'm a GM, which is why I'm thinking pre-draft might see another (or both) remaining members of the Big 3 move on.

trades of Vanek, Miller, Stafford, and Ott will add 1st and 2nds to this list.

Had Ennis twice accidentally.

Converted the list of players under contract to a table with cap hits + RFA/UFA status/year.

Does Girgensons's contract slide because he didn't play in the NHL or do AHL games count as well?

AHL games count, so his contract does not slide. A contract only slides if the player doesn't play in the NHL/AHL at all, or the player is playing in the AHL on an Amateur Try-Out contract.

Girgensons slides, he needs to play 5 NHL games for it to count as a year.

I believe it could slide next year if he doesnt play 9 NHL games.

Could essentially be a 5 year elc

It's definitely a possibility, and even though Regier never really does them he's desperately trying to improve his roster, so he could do something out of line and go after one. However, there have only been eight offer sheets since 2006, and only one, Dustin Penner, wasn't matched. There are a lot of good RFA's this year (Here's a CapGeek list of them), but basically the only way a team won't match a contract is if it's overpayment by the other team in terms of both salary and picks. It also seems to damage relationships between GM's when they offer sheet someone's player, so the better route to go is to just try and trade for the guy.
