NFL coaches address COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in locker rooms: 'Do your research, talk to doctors' (msn.com)
Washington Football Team defensive end Montez Sweat was one of them. He told reporters on Wednesday that he's "not a fan" of the COVID-19 vaccine.
"I probably won't get vaccinated until I get more facts and that stuff," Sweat said. "I'm not a fan of it at all. ... I haven't caught COVID yet so I don't see me treating COVID until I actually get COVID."

Sweat wasn't alone in speaking about his vaccine hesitancy Wednesday. Newly acquired Carolina Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold also announced that he hasn't been vaccinated and doesn't know if he will be.
"There's a ton of different things that go into it," Darnold told reporters of his decision to hold off on getting vaccinated. "I'm gonna evaluate that on my own and make the best decision that I feel is the best for myself."

It's the Hollywood syndrome. Pay someone a lot of money and they think they're geniuses.

"I gotta do my research."

You've had months. The vaccine is safe. God I hate celebrities.
I get the hesitancy a little. They are premeir athletes and their body is their meal ticket. With that said, you are correct, but the problem is you have clinically insane people saying the vaccine has microchips in it or that you become a giant f***ing magnet. Rivera, I think, did the best job when he brought in a non clinically insane specialist to detail it out and field questions.

The whole mindset of I won't address it until it affects me is such a ludicrous mindset

I think the same logic of why many people don’t get the flu vaccine, is what we are seeing in lots of healthy people under 40.

I am not equating covid to the flu, or agreeing with this, but the truth is the chances of covid impacting a healthy athlete is extremely low. So i think some people are following what you are suggesting: “it’s very unlikely to impact me, why should I get vaccinated.” So less focus on the negatives of the vaccine, and more focus on the lack of positives.

it’s a big hurdle to get over as there is logic to it

The bolded is the part that confuses me the most. They’re afraid to get a shot that has been proven mostly harmless and helpful, but have no problem slamming their heads into each other with regularity despite all of the information they’ve had about concussions. Despite seeing the impact of CTE. Despite seeing teammates or former players becoming paralyzed.

They are far more likely to get blood clots, or be impacted physically for the rest of their lives, or even die playing football then they ever will be getting the vaccine.

Why do you assume they feel fear about a shot? Perhaps the issue isn't what they fear, but what they *dont* fear. If you *arent* afraid of the virus, maybe that's the issue? What is happening is people are talking past each other because they are making assumptions about the feelings of others.

Regarding health risk and career. People have chosen careers that have health risks. They get paid to do so. This is hardly new in the history of the species.

Edit to say before accusation of OT/political, it's fine if people want to say, for the good of the Buffalo Bills, take the vaccine. I think that's a fair point and I wouldn't argue otherwise. What is happening in this thread is people are commenting on the morality basically of football players when that's hardly necessary, since we aren't mind-readers or empaths. There is a moral majority on this thread perhaps and that's fine, but don't need the religious crusade. Take the vaccine because good for Bills, that's fine.

That makes no sense. They wouldn’t go through this whole hassle of restricted access to teammates, additional testing and limitations of practice if they didn’t have hang ups about the shot. If you’re not “afraid” of the shot you would just get it and move on. Help me understand the logic of an NFL person “not afraid of the virus” for not getting the vaccine?

And yes, there are other jobs that also risk health to have their career. How many of those people are not getting the shot because they are afraid of it? You have no idea, so your point is without merit. No one is analyzing how many skydiving instructors are electing to effect their job situation and team success because they chose not to get the shot.

How has this shot proven harmless? There's no long term studies involved, it's quite experimental. I've been the recipient of a whole cocktail of different shots, it has negatively affected my body chemistry. I went from no allergies to now the slightest amount of shellfish or a bee sting will kill me. Literally in less than a year from eating a shrimp party platter to being medevaced from a sub due to surf and turf you have no clue what this will do to a body.

It isn't the shot it is the fact they may think it will do harm to their body.

I think Beane and McD are concerned about not seeing Star for such a long time and opened up cap with Diggs in case a big 1tech move needs to be made.
I don't think they want last year's defensive disappointment happening again and a lot of the teams struggles came from that hole.

I don't think they are worried about Star. I think they opened up the capspace w Diggs because they know a new deal is coming in the off-season, so why not do it. It gives them flexibility in case anything ever happens.

Im sure they’ve been in touch with Star this past year and have helped develop training plans and such.

Personal coach: Star Lotulelei 'looks excited to come back' to the Bills

Lei Talamaivao, Star's trainer: "Mainly, we just focused on the basic stuff. Get-offs, stance, hand placement. He looks great. I've never seen Star this ... not mobile ... but he looks really, really good. You can see that he's been working really, really hard in the weight room and on his dieting. I didn't ask any questions. We just hit the field. He looks ... let's just say he looks like he's excited to come back."

Also, love watching the Gilmore scenario play out. Annoyed he got a ring but hoping they send him to Houston or something like that.

I think the year off caused him to rediscover his love for the game and he got in the best shape of his life to win a super bowl.
As the famous philospher Joni Mitchell said in Big Yellow Taxi "Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you got 'til it's gone". He got to see what his life would be like with football gone.

Mon Dieu! Joni Mitchell quote in a Bills football discussion! Take me now, I've read it all...

Not Houston, because they would probably do something stupid like give up their 1st rounder for him.
