He has no obligation to sign with us now, he can elect to go back into this year's draft, where'd he probably get drafted higher than he did as an 18 year old. He's watched a lot of other Sabres picks, guys he knows from our development camps get signed - that's gotta hurt ego wise, never mind the nice signing bonus kids get when they sign their ELC.

It is super unlikely he would get picked higher than 74th! Not many draft re-entries get picked higher and many of those re-entries are second round picks. For Brycen a 60K signing bonus with two further 60K payments coming, he would have been a fool to give that up.

Yea, look at Paetsch. Went from 52nd to 202nd. I can't think of many guys who reentered that went higher.

My favorite reentry was Choiunard who went 15th to Ottawa, reentered and went 45th to Ottawa.

Good. Would like to see him continue to develop his offensive game and hopefully someday pan out as a PP specialist type.

Sure, he could. But I'm managing expectations.

If he turns out to be a solid roster player that contribute in a meaningful way I'll be thrilled. Anything more is gravy.

I want him to continue to round off his edges as a defensive zone player and maintain his abilities to move the puck up the ice. I've been so very underwhelmed by the Sabres different regime's ability to develop a specific PP specialist at the AHL level that perhaps my reaction to your comment is more of a reaction to old failures.

Touche.

To be clear, I see him as a much more realistic "PP specialist." He's definitely not a MAG or JGL type (is there a rule about PP specialist failures having two last names?) nor does he project as that kind of dangler even if he pans out. When I say PP specialist I mean the kind that actually works. Nathan Paetsch esque his first few years when he ran our second PP unit and was decent in his own end. Someone who can play 15 minutes a night, not embarrass in the D zone, and log PP time. Ideally you pair him with similar skill level, but more defensively oriented (Florentino....) and get a cheap third pairing for a couple years. They're exactly the type of players my dream team funnels through on my third pairing, because the top 4 is so amazing they're eating all the money.

I think Casey Nelson might be closer than we think to being that second unit PP guy.
