not sure if that's necessarily true. 40 point defensemen get paid, period.

oh he'll get paid, but if a year from now he's still a 15 minute, sheltered 3rd pair guy I don't know if it will be with the Bruins.

I'm not really worried about it as I think he's the kind of kid who will thrive with the extra minutes, but I just think it's reality that he's going to have to prove he's more than just an offensive specialist if the Bruins are going to give him a lucrative contract.

Would you take him over Dean Lombardi? I don't know if I could at the end of the day.

Like Chia a lot, but that's a bold statement.

Yes, I am sure if we were all Kings fans we would have a serious gripe or two with him.

When you see a team everyday it is easy to see the weakness, when you watch the highlights of a team for every game it is a lot harder to point out flaws.

As for the just keep pushing the problem forward, I think we can manage to get a good roster for years to come.

We have a cap problem because he went all in last year with a team good enough to be a favorite in the Cup final, if not then a slight under dog, the cap will go up in the future. Next year our cap goes up 4 million on top of the normal bump. Plus almost 7 million off the books easy in Kelly, Campbell, Paille. Big change comes next off season.

Some people saying Boychuk is gone...

Highly doubt it, Kelly and Bart will be moved before Boychuk. Boychuk will get Seidenberg money and they will work to keep him here, valuable to this team

What about a fourth line of Paille, Spooner, Kelly?Depending on the teams direction with a fighter either Spooner or Kelly could be slotted out for Robbins. As long as Kelly is still smart, 2way, and quick on his feet I think that'd be a great 4th line.

So are we cap compliant with these deals?

I'm still trying to figure that out myself. I did a "lazy man's roster" on CapGeek - all I did was move Savvy to LTIR. We'd have 12 forwards and 8D, which is a bit of a problem in theory, but here's how it went....

FORWARDS
Brad Marchand ($4.500m) / Patrice Bergeron ($6.500m) / Reilly Smith ($1.400m)
Milan Lucic ($6.000m) / David Krejci ($5.250m) / Loui Eriksson ($4.250m)
Daniel Paille ($1.300m) / Carl Soderberg ($1.008m) / Chris Kelly ($3.000m)
Justin Florek ($0.600m) / Gregory Campbell ($1.600m) / Jordan Caron ($0.600m)

DEFENSEMEN
Zdeno Chara ($6.917m) / Dennis Seidenberg ($4.000m)
Johnny Boychuk ($3.367m) / Adam McQuaid ($1.567m)
Torey Krug ($1.400m) / Matt Bartkowski ($1.250m)
Dougie Hamilton ($0.894m) / Kevan Miller ($0.800m)

GOALTENDERS
Tuukka Rask ($7.000m)
Niklas Svedberg ($0.600m)

BONUS OVERAGE
$4,779,500
------
SALARY CAP: $69,000,000; CAP PAYROLL: $68,582,000; BONUSES: $600,000
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $418,000

So, we've got about $400K "left" if you do the minimal work of moving Florek up, make Caron dress for games on a regular basis, have 2 D-men in the press box, and keep Warsofsky in Providence. (N.B.: I am not advocating any of those moves in particular. I'm just number crunching.)

Just a few questions - this roster would be theoretically possible, right? We had a 22-man roster for most of last season, with 2 guys in the press box, didn't we - or was I just not paying attention?

Also, I'm pretty sure that the extra $400K would vanish due to various and sundry rules regarding the LTIR. However, there's still room with respect to who you want to pick BEFORE opening day. Instead of the cheap Florek ($600K), you could replace him with anyone worth up to about $1M - including Pastrnak ($925K).

I'm mainly asking this because I wonder why we "have" to move Boychuk, Bart, or Kelly for cap space. I get moving a D-man simply because it's nice to have a D and a forward in the press box....but Kelly wouldn't solve that problem, just the cap space problem.

It's great to hear these guys signed for cheap but now knowing this, why the hold outs then? (for lack of a better phrase on the circumstances) Seems like this could've been done all along...but I won't complain, just more confused. :)

Because Krug and Smith do not want to play for 1.4 million, they gave in because if they did not, it was only going to get worse no leverage.

What if the bruins came out of the gate slowly and their replacements sucked?

I guess, but they are better off to get game ready for 82 games rather than 60-65, and no camp makes for greater risk of them having a worse season and loosing leverage next season when they have rights. And what if their replacements are playing well, then your really screwed.

I don't know just trying to counter but you have a valid point

Best case for them was one of the 3 mill plus players getting injured, as cold as that is.

Too bad they are only getting 9 days of camp.

I think if Smith has a breakout 70 point season, he can almost act like a UFA because chances are he gets 5 million from someone and the Bruins would be in a huge bind. Same for Krug.

Big deal to get these guys done during the season especially if they are having good years.

"I do not entertain hypotheticals. The world as it is is vexing enough."

Someone quoted that line a few months back (from True Grit), and if memory serves, you loved the quote.

What if the Bruins came out of the gate winning 9 of 10? Then they're in a pickle. Not in game shape, no money coming in, no leverage.

I don't think they could take that chance. Its not like they are veterans with a nice nest egg yet.

What if one of them broke a leg in camp? Endless possibilities if you get into "what if".

9 days of camp should be fine I'd think too, especially considering they've been working out. I wonder if they're given any instruction by the team in this sort of situation, if they're told what sort of schemes and plays to be thinking about. I'm sure it's against the CBA to do with unsigned players but it could probably be pretty easily worked around.
