The Point: Lawyering up

'TALKING POINT
Wagering on Belmont casino?

The project, which was first announced a year ago this week, is being built by a group of developers called New York Arena Partners. It cannot include a casino because of a specific clause in the request for proposals and, since then, in the project documents, sources told The Point. Ultimately, the final transaction documents and lease will include that prohibition, too, they said.
But there’s nothing in New York Racing Association regulations or elsewhere that prohibits a casino at Belmont Park more generally, sources told The Point.
So, could casino gambling come to Belmont in the future? Sources are quick to note that area residents fought against the possibility of video lottery terminals at Belmont nearly three years ago. Would anyone want to try that fight again? Or, would they be more likely to turn to Aqueduct, where the VLTs ended up after the Belmont battle?
Then again, interests and needs change - and we’re still a ways off from any new casino being considered in New York. After all, state law prohibits new casino licenses from being issued until 2023...

All they need is some full gambling, several dispensaries, and many bars and restaurants and their money/attendance/revenue problems are solved.

I live 5 minutes from Belmont. If I could drive there and throw down my sports bets I would be in heaven.

I wonder how NYRA would deal with residents' concerns if a casino is part of Belmont Park in the future.

That's what I don't understand and Randi is usually on point. Aqueduct/Resorts is 5 minutes away from Belmont. It would be ridiculous to add another casino that close.

I'm guessing she is confusing casino with a sports book.

I think she's engaging in a bit of mental masturbation.

Just how many people would use the LIRR to come to a game from the west?? Not having a way to arrive from the east is just pure idiocy! I would take the train from the Babylon line often - even the Ronkonkoma line if I had to. I live 5 minutes from the Babylon station, so I'm a bit biased . . . (p.s. I thought I made this post yesterday, but I don't see it, so here it is again!)

I would probably take the train from the city on weekday games. If this were an option, I would drive to Belmont in the morning, park there for the day and then take the train from Penn to the game. If that took too long in the morning (and it might), I would take the train from Penn and Uber home.

I guess so, but it was stupid to poke a stick at that hornet's nest. I think that NYS has zero interest in having a second casino operation so close to Aqueduct. Some of the NIMBY's have been holding up the casino red herring (in regards to the hotel) in an attempt to try to get a rise out of local residents -- to no success (as usual). Why the f*** give them some ammunition, even if anyone who stops to think about should quickly realize that it is also BS.

Randi Marshall was either uninformed or just speculating about a future event that cannot happen. Casinos and VLTs are expressly prohibited as per the RFP.

I get that; she was speculating about it being part of the existing race track itself. Either way, it was idiotic. Not going to happen as NYS won't want to cannibalize its Aquaduct operation. Did she need clicks that bad? It's just noise, but it's still f***ing annoying, and the usual assholes on twitter will have a field day with it.

I think the long-term idea is to upgrade Belmont and then eventually shutter Aqueduct and further develop that site for gambling/entertainment. I read something indicating that they might try to get the prospective Aqueduct developers to help financially with Belmont infrastructure to pave the way for their site's availability.

Personally, I don't feel right making a sports bet without some overweight dude on a motorized cart with oxygen nearby. If he's smoking a cigarette or eating an oversized turkey leg, I'm feeling real comfortable and may go for the parlay.
Fat guy on a cart with a turkey leg.... nice x-site pollination!
