Nobody's fooled. The Flames won't be going anywhere. One side will eventually crumble to the other to keep the Flames in Calgary. Just like the Oilers weren't going to move.

But Burke's concussion comment is eye-rollingly stupid. Maybe you shouldn't drive because that can cause concussions too if you hit someone. Better yet, don't even get out of your bed. Just lay there all day. Don't move a muscle. You'll be safe.

Seriously though, does Brian Burke know how to tie a tie? Has he ever addressed this?

He says he likes how it pisses people off and it throws them off their game.

“I don't think it hurt that it ticked a bunch of people off,” Katie says. “I also don’t think it hurts that it certainly sends a subconscious message that he’s ready to drop his gloves at any time for a good fight.”

Indeed, Burke’s tie stubbornness seems to inform his personality. (So does his hair; son Patrick has issued a $1,000 bounty for anyone who cuts it.) “With a dash of truculence,” reads the biography on his Twitter account, which carries more than 135,000 followers and is maintained by Katie. In other words, “Once he realizes something annoys people, it might as well go on our family crest,” says Patrick Burke, the NHL’s Director of Player Safety. “It’s happening.”

Though Burke claims ignorance with Twitter, his children keep him abreast of tie-related mentions. Since many range from confused to slightly annoyed, Burke keeps driving the joke mostly because he can. “I love the fact that it aggravates some people,” he says. “If I can aggravate people without doing something, I’ll keep doing it.” Instead of the four-in-hand, he offers just one middle finger.

Wish people would address why they care so much.

Because its odd to routinely go out with no intention of wearing clothes properly, especially in a public position. If I were to wear my left shoe as a hat I'm sure that would get some questions.

Actually, from that same article:

So there. Mystery solved. An NHL team president, searching for comfy shortcuts, drifts from conventional formality and instead winds up here, sitting in his office on a busy afternoon in mid-February, fielding questions about fashion, explaining that, really, there is no explanation at all.

“I’m not smart enough to develop a fashion statement,†he says. “It wasn’t a conscious decision where I said I’m going to be the guy that doesn’t tie his tie. That’s just how it happened.â€

He did it because he was lazy and it also tickled his fancy that not tying it pissed people off. Some management don't use ties at all. But Burke still keeps his around in case he wants to do it up for something more business like because he thinks no tie is too casual.

Most NHL goons are not goons by choice. They took that role because there is no other way they make the show and get paid a fortune. To suggest they don't know the risks because the NHL wasn't clear is basically to suggest they are idiots. The risks due to head shots has been pretty clear for well over 30 years. The science may not have had everything down pat but the risks were obvious to anyone with even moderate observation skills. Even if you are not a goon, you are dealing with big blows, head on ice, etc. I guarantee 100% players will always show up, quite simply for money. Yes, there is onus on the league to try to help but there is also definitely onus on the players to make an adult decision as to whether they want to take that risk or not. Sometimes you have to put on your big boy pants and make tough decisions.

And nothing you said relates back to the point, he didn't say any "hard truth" or something people didn't already know, he took a cop-out and tried to be witty while instead looked stupid. The adult answer would be giving insight to the situation. The only people who think this was a good answer are people who just realized hockey is a physical sport, congrats.

This is like asking a Mayor how to make the streets a safer place and he replies, "stay inside if you don't want to get hurt". Guys an idiot.

So tell me where he's wrong.

I think it's a bad deal for Katz.
Anyone in real estate knows the value of an asset is in the property.
Edmonton owns the land and the arena and has a tenant for 41 dates/year. They can use that asset to book more rental dates (hence the promotional 2M contribution).
Furthermore, they get Katz to pony up 20m of his own money to be a tenant! That's like kicking back 1/3 of your rent to your landlord for the privilege of being a tenant.
This doesn't even consider the emotional investment the hockey team means to the community.
Someone who thinks this was a sour deal for the city of Edmonton please enlighten me.

Burke knows what he is doing, and the people on the other side of the table know what he is doing. Everyone else is running around in circles....clueless and upset.

This is how I see it as well...Burke is basically just trying to get the ball rolling on a situation that is just stagnating..Saying he will move the team is just the usual 'posturing' that NHL management does...What he is doing is ruffling feathers to get the ear of the' powers that be'.

The Flames will get the same deal the oilers got--which will see The Flames owners coughing up some money--the days of the City/Provinces paying 100% for arenas and then giving the keys to the team are over

A somewhat remote city of 1.2 million is going to need to chip in, I have a hard time imagining that the venue as a whole can make money like an arena that serves a population of 5 million+.

I don't mind chipping in, but i want to see the city go to war with the owners first.

Seeing how challenging it's been to move the Coyote's and the NHL's priority being expansion first, it's going to take a lot of huffing and puffing by the brass before I start getting worried.

I agree a lot with Burke but its silly that their so determine on the Next spot, sorry but thats not the right spot, that a prime spot to continue developing the inner city. The city of Calgary, as far as I know, never shot down a new building just not there as it doesn't make sense, they have Victoria park in mind as it could use the development there and won't hurt inner city development as thats pretty limited here. Calgary needs a new building, Flames should be more focused on the benefits of having it here vs treating to move as its getting old.

I love Burke. Always have and always will. But............

1. Burke, King and anybody with the Flames had better tread lightly when it comes to talking about moving. Katz going to Seattle set back his building construction about 2 years IMO. If it's just a bluff (it is) to expedite the process don't bother. The opposite is what happens.

2. What the hell does he do anyways? The POHO model sucks. Too many people in charge.

Either tie the tie or don't even wear it like wtf

This. I get some people have their quirks (i.e. Slats sucking on a cigar when he's watching the games), but Burkie's untied tie looks so stupid.

I could care less how he wears it when he's walking around shooting the **** at games, but when you're doing a formal press conference, tie your effing tie.

Everything Burke said in that video made sense and was well thought out but I guess the hockey media is going to do what it always does and try to lynch him for the extra numbers it draws

So what are the people that get mad about not wearing a tie haha

I think it's a pretty common opinion that a highly paid professional shouldn't show up looking like a drunk when speaking on behalf of his employer. A well adjusted person would agree with that, and would avoid being that guy.
